Baron Corbin, Global Cruiserweight Series and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertFeb 17, 2016

Opportunity is at the heart of WWE NXT news this week. For Baron Corbin, that came in the form of matches outside of the developmental brand.

The Lone Wolf twice knocked off Superstars from the main roster.

For the world's high-flyers and undersized dynamos, WWE hosting the Global Cruiserweight Series will generate a wealth of opportunities. The WWE Network-exclusive tournament will showcase some of the best athletes in the wrestling world. Meanwhile, NXT officials will surely be watching that event unfold, scouting the field.

Other stories featured Sami Callihan talking about his exit from NXT, a prospect's scary injury and Bull Dempsey moving on.

Riddick Moss Hurt During Live Event

Riddick Moss crashed to the mat and was soon lying still as the referee attended to him.

The scary incident happened in a six-man tag match at an NXT live event in Jacksonville, Florida, on Feb. 11. Moss teamed with Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson against Sami Zayn, Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady.

A fan correspondent report from Wrestling Inc revealed that Moss was injured after taking a suplex. In a video and photo posted by fans in attendance (h/t Wrestle Zone), he appeared to fall unconscious after the spot.

No further word has emerged about the injury.

As unsettling as seeing Moss go limp like that was, it was comforting that the referee spotted it so quickly. He was at Moss' side in an instant.

Baron Corbin Works WWE Live Events

Baron Corbin traveled with the main roster over the weekend, netting him an opportunity to travel outside of the NXT realm.

Per ProFightDB.com, Corbin wrestled at two California house shows. He won a Triple Threat against Fandango and Viktor each time out.

Getting experience in front of a different crowd is key for his development. The NXT faithful is made of more diehard fans. Impressing casual fans who are likely less familiar with him is a different beast.

It's telling that not only did WWE assign him these bouts, but it scripted for him to come away with two wins. That all points to him being high on the NXT hierarchy.

WWE Adding 'Global Cruiserweight Series' to Network

There will see be another place for potential WWE stars to shine. WWE announced on Tuesday that it will air the Global Cruiserweight Series on the WWE Network starting on July 13.

The release described the event as a tournament that "brings together more than 30 of the greatest in-ring competitors at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida, to vie for the right to call themselves the best cruiserweight in the world."

This is a thrilling development. The WWE Network will benefit from this original content. And the series gives WWE a way to put out a product different than its standard one.

From a developmental standpoint, it allows WWE to bring in high-flyers from around the world and give them a bit of a test run. Should someone capture the audience's attention during the tourney, it will be an easy transition into NXT for them.

Sami Callihan Talks NXT Relationship

4 of 5

Sami Callihan (known as Solomon Crowe with NXT) made a gutsy move when he left a coveted spot at NXT last year, but it sounds like the door is open for him to return.

Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard, he explained why he asked for his release. He wanted to seek out opportunity on the independent circuit to up his value. Of the decision he said, "I needed to roll the dice, and it may pay off one day and it may not."

When Triple H came to an Evolve show recently, Callihan got a chance to catch up with him. The Game apparently told him he would be welcome back at NXT in the future.

Callihan explained, "He said, 'Man, I know how good you are, and to quit the top company in the world takes balls. You left on good terms and did it professionally, so if a spot opens, it's yours.'"

With as little as NXT was using him, trying to elevate himself elsewhere is understandable. The competition at the developmental brand remains stiff, but Callihan is plenty talented enough to work his way back in.

Other News, Notes

Austin Aries' NXT debut has yet to air, but the company is already looking to create buzz for him. As Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc noted, WWE released Aries' entrance theme, "Ambition and Vision," on iTunes.

That follows WWE creating Aries merchandise upon his arrival.

NXT is headed outside of its Orlando home base to give other Florida fans a chance to see the product live. Triple H announced on Twitter that NXT will be headed to Miami and West Palm Beach in March.

Following his NXT release, Bull Dempsey (now known as Bull James) will return to the ring that month. Grand Slam Wrestling announced that the former NXT prospect will be featured at an event in Moosic, Pennsylvania.

No longer shackled by a comedy gimmick, expect the powerhouse to make an impact on the independent circuit. He will certainly be hungry to prove WWE wrong for not believing in him.
