Borthwick-Jackson was absent from the matchday squad for the trip to the Etihad Stadium.
United's Injury Curse Continues
The English giants lost first-choice left-back Luke Shaw to a broken leg earlier in the campaign. Fellow defenders Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia have also all missed chunks of the season because of injury.
Van Gaal has been forced to experiment once again in Borthwick-Jackson's absence, with Daley Blind and Rojo filling the void at left-back.
Even Darmian has been asked to do a job in an unnatural position, highlighting United's need to get key defenders back fit.
