After a rain-soaked Monday delayed first-round action, play continued Tuesday at the 2016 Rio Open. David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal and Johanna Larsson were among the seeded players set to take the court in Rio de Janeiro.

Below is a brief recap for how each of the two draws unfolded.

Ferrer remains on course to defend his Rio Open title after beating Nicolas Jarry 6-3, 7-6(3). The world's No. 6 player didn't have a great day at the office, committing six double-faults and only managing to get 53 percent of his first serves.

Ferrer won a healthy 54 percent of his second-service points, though, and saved six of nine break-point opportunities. Jarry nearly pushed the match to a third set after taking a 5-2 lead in the second but couldn't finish the job.

Seventh-seeded Fabio Fognini was pushed similarly hard by Aljaz Bedene, ultimately advancing 7-5, 6-3.

"Obviously I wanted to play well like I did last year, but like all first-round matches it was very hard, very complicated," Fognini said after the match, per the ATP World Tour's website. "The truth is that I finished pretty fatigued. But that's the game, you have ups and downs and you have to accept it, you get angry at times but at the end I leave the court happy because I managed to win the match and move on to the next round."

Jack Sock and Thomaz Bellucci weren't quite so lucky, both falling victim to first-round upsets. Sock simply had no answer for the serve of Federico Delbonis, winning a mere 27.5 percent of his total return points. Bellucci, meanwhile, remains winless against Alexandr Dolgopolov. The 27-year-old Ukrainian was the victor at last year's Miami Open and also defeated Bellucci at the Apia International Sydney in January before Tuesday's meeting.

Of course, most eyes were transfixed on the top-seeded Nadal, who beat fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. The match was briefly delayed because of rain, captured by the tournament's Twitter account:

That delay didn't stop Nadal from advancing 6-1, 6-4.

On paper, his second-round match against Nicolas Almagro could be interesting.

"Almagro is a tough player and clay is his favorite surface," Nadal said of his opponent, per the Rio Open Twitter account. "It's going to be a difficult match. I'll have to play my best."

According to Matchstat, though, Nadal is 13-1 against Almagro, winning seven of the last eight in straight sets. Barring a major shock, Nadal should advance to the quarterfinals.

Women's Recap

First RoundPetra Martic(1) Teliana Pereira6-3, 7-5

First Round(6) Lara ArruabarrenaRebecca Peterson6-0, 6-3

The tournament's top seed in the women's singles draw couldn't even make it past the first round after Petra Martic upset Teliana Pereira in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.

Pereira's struggles on serve were her downfall. She won just 61 percent of her first-service points and allowed nine break-point opportunities, three of which Martic converted. Both a native and a resident of Brazil, Pereira was one of the fan favorites in Rio, but she was unable to transfer that support over to her performance.

Martic will face off with Marina Erakovic in the second round after Erakovic beat Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in three sets, 7-6(8), 6-7(7), 6-2. The two battled for a little over three hours to determine a winner, and the fact they combined to have 24 break points illustrates how slim the margins were between victory and defeat.

Larsson and Lara Arruabarrena were the other two seeded women in action, and both prevailed in straight sets. Larsson ran into tough resistance from Lourdes Dominguez Lino before winning 7-5, 6-4, and Arruabarrena brushed aside Rebecca Peterson 6-0, 6-3.

Although Pereira is out of the tournament, Brazilian fans can still throw their support behind Paula Cristina Goncalves, who knocked Julia Glushko out Tuesday in straight sets. Goncalves will have her hands full in the second round against Larsson, so having the home-court advantage could prove pivotal toward getting her through the quarterfinals.
