Brandon Weeden Re-Signs with Texans: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldApr 1, 2016

Despite not living up to his first-round draft billing to date, Brandon Weeden's live arm and physical tools should allow him to be a mainstay on an NFL roster.

After spending time with the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans in 2015, Weeden will remain in his final destination of this past season. Mark Berman of Fox 26 reported the news while John McClain of the Houston Chronicle confirmed the report.

NFL Network's Rand Getlin noted Weeden's deal with the Texans is for two years and $4 million.

Weeden failed to establish himself as the Cleveland Browns' franchise quarterback after the team drafted him in 2012—but many before and since Weeden have fallen short in Cleveland. He actually played rather well for Dallas before being released, posting a 92.1 passer rating in four games in 2015, including three starts.

The 32-year-old signal-caller then proceeded to win a start down the stretch for Houston, helping the Texans win the AFC South title. That had to figure into why the team decided to re-sign him.

Per the Texans' public relations department on Twitter, Weeden did make franchise history in a start against Tennessee:

One could argue Weeden has never been in a really ideal position to succeed in the NFL. The Browns haven't been a breeding ground for top-tier QBs to say the least, while backing up Tony Romo for America's Team was a tall order in and of itself.

Houston at least has a capable backup to supply depth behind the newly signed Brock Osweiler and creates some continuity for coach Bill O'Brien's offensive system.

Given Osweiler's limited experience—he's only made seven starts, all last year, with the Denver Broncos and eventually lost his starting job to Peyton Manning in the final game of the regular season—the Texans also know they may need reinforcements at quarterback.

All the physical attributes are present for Weeden to thrive. He must not hesitate as much in the pocket, exercise better judgment on how and when to put touch on throws and be more consistent with his mechanics to realize his potential.

The Texans have Weeden back at a considerable bargain, which is nice considering their unsavory QB situation.

In light of the decision to re-sign Weeden, the Texans are keeping a piece of the offense that helped them win a division title last year. This will be Osweiler's team to start the year, so Weeden can serve as a mentor who brings valuable starting experience with him.
