According to the NFL on ESPN, it was the first missed field goal in a Super Bowl since Super Bowl XLV, when Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham missed a 52-yard attempt against the Green Bay Packers:
The kick was Gano's first missed field goal since Week 15 against the New York Giants.
Before that miss, Gano had hit six straight, including three in the postseason.
Since Super Bowl XLV and before Gano's miss, kickers had converted 13 straight field-goal attempts in the big game, including two from the Denver Broncos' Brandon McManus in Super Bowl 50. He added a third made field goal after Gano's miss.
The Internet was quick to get on Gano's case, as evidenced by this image from NFL Retweet:

With Super Bowl 50 turning into such a defensive matchup, it is vital for teams to snatch up any possible points that come their way. With Denver nursing a slim lead, those points wasted by the Panthers kicker could come back to bite Carolina when it comes down to crunch time.
