Best Booking Options for Shawn Michaels at WWE WrestleMania 32

Ryan DilbertFeb 4, 2016

The massiveness of WWE WrestleMania 32 and its being in Shawn Michaels' home state begs for The Heartbreak Kid to be involved at the marquee event.

Michaels' participation in any part of The Show of Shows will amplify the event. WWE apparently agrees. According to PWInsider (h/t Wrestle Zone's Nick Paglino), WWE is interested in giving Michaels a significant role at WrestleMania 32.

If the Hall of Famer agrees to head to Dallas come April 3, what's the best way for him to make an impact?

We know it won't be as a wrestler. Michaels has been one of the few wrestlers to stayed retired after calling it quits. And he made it clear on Twitter that he has no desire for a comeback match:

WWE still has prime places to plug him in, though.

The goal should be to make full use of his star power and add entertainment value to WrestleMania. That can come via accompanying a newcomer to the ring or inserting himself into the main event as an official.

Either way, Michaels' presence should both stir up nostalgia and give an emerging star the proverbial rub.

Host

At WrestleMania XXVII, The Rock returned to play master of ceremonies. He opened the show by taking shots at John Cena and warming up the crowd. The Brahma Bull later intervened in the main event, making sure it didn't end in a double count-out.

The Rock created added buzz for WrestleMania in this role. He gave casual fans one more reason to tune in.

Michaels can do the same for WrestleMania in Texas.

The Heartbreak Kid's comic timing was a huge part of the early success of D-Generation X. Let him have fun as he did back then, goofing around backstage with other Superstars and playing to the crowd.

He's sure to make the show more fun. Plus, WWE would be happy to use his name as a means to pull in more viewers.

The Rock overshadowed The Miz and Cena in the end. WWE can learn from its mistake there and tone down Michaels' involvement. Still, his relationship with Triple H and Undertaker is something to be exploited.

As The Rock announced on Instagram, he's already set to appear at WrestleMania. That could mean a chance for Michaels and The Rock to have some sort of faceoff, or at least a version of the constellation of stars who opened WrestleMania XXX.

Manager

Michaels' stamp of approval would do wonders for a rising star.

The freshly arrived AJ Styles could use that in a big way. Diehard fans are familiar with his work at TNA and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Casual fans are less sure who he is, though.

And recently, WWE has inexplicably focused on his weaknesses. As PWInsider's Mike Johnson wrote, WWE is presenting Styles as "a guy wrestling matches while the audience is being sort of fed the idea that he's an overachiever who's bound to fail, because he's just a small-time guy with a Southern background and, well, he's small."

Having Michaels come in and say, "I've been watching you for a long time, and I think you're going to be something special" would go a long way in elevating Styles.

Attach Michaels to Styles heading into WrestleMania. Have him accompany Styles to the ring, bringing along his name power and the power of nostalgia.

The Showstopper can pass the torch to Styles this way by backing him up. This is the same method WCW attempted with Harley Race and Vader and is what WWE is doing right now with Ric Flair and Charlotte.

In addition, Michaels' superkicking someone at some point in the match would be a welcome bonus.

Guest Referee

The ideal spot for Michaels is in a striped shirt in the presumed main event: Triple H vs. Roman Reigns.

His presence would add depth to this story. As Triple H's longtime friend, he could play favorites, or at least struggle with trying not to. Or he could be disgusted by who Triple H has become and bicker with his ally mid-match.

Triple H and Shawn Michaels share a moment on Raw.

Michaels has shown that he can bolster a match as a referee, adding drama and subplots.

At Hell in a Cell 2013, he refereed the world title match between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan. The anticipation of Michaels' doing Triple H's bidding added a ticking clock to the bout. We knew his allegiances would upend the match; it was just a matter of when.

When Triple H took on Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania XXVIII, Michaels served as the official.

He nearly cost Undertaker the streak with a temper-driven superkick. He wrestled with the decision of whether to stop the match when it grew most vicious. Those elements bettered the bout.

Michaels can do the same with Reigns vs. Triple H.

He would add a compelling wrinkle to the matchup, help add to the "odds stacked against Reigns" storyline and contribute star power. In short, he makes the main event bigger. That's the gig WWE should be offering Michaels as it looks to make WrestleMania 32 an even more colossal event than normal.
