McDavid To Return Tuesday vs. Blue Jackets
Monday, Feb. 1
McDavid will make his much-anticipated return to the ice Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets as the Oilers return from the All-Star break, according to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug.
He's been out since he broke his clavicle in a Nov. 4 game against the Philadelphia Flyers after violently colliding into the boards behind the goal net, as shown by Sportsnet Canada:
The 19-year-old Canadian was arguably the most highly touted prospect since Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux broke into the league as the top pick in the 1984 draft.
Before his injury, McDavid burst out to a torrid pace with 12 points in his first 13 games. An injury of such magnitude this early in his career is concerning but perhaps not a complete shock given the nature of the sport coupled with his aggressive play.
The Oilers are hoping he can live up to the lofty expectations, as Edmonton has not reached the playoffs since the 2005-06 season and is currently seventh in the Pacific Division at 19-26-5 with the worst record in the Western Conference.
Edmonton was 5-8 with McDavid on the ice, and a playoff spot may be out of reach even if he’s stellar down the stretch. But his return should nonetheless give the Oilers an immediate boost as he continues to develop.
