Let's take a look at what's on tap for Wednesday's episode of NXT.
The Women
After becoming the new No. 1 contender for the Women's Championship last week, Carmella will team up with Bayley to take on Emma and Alexa Bliss.
Seeing a champion and a challenger join forces is nothing new, but it could lead to some interesting storyline developments.
What if Carmella turns on Bayley during the match? What if Bayley takes out Carmella before she has a chance to double-cross her? There's a few different directions this story could go.
As far as Emma and Bliss are concerned, this bout will have little to no impact on them. Even if they get the win, they will not earn a title shot.
Emma and Bayley are two of the best competitors in the women's division, and Carmella and Bliss have improved quite a bit over the past 12 months. Regardless of who wins, this should be a fun match.
The Men
The tag team division gets a break this week, which means the four remaining matches will all be singles contests.
Apollo Crews vs. Tye Dillinger, Baron Corbin vs. Rich Swann and Samoa Joe vs. Johnny Gargano are all scheduled to take place, but the encounter people will be the most excited about will be Sami Zayn vs. Adam Rose.
Zayn is still getting back to his old self after returning from an injury that kept him out of action for several months.
He's an important part of NXT, and having him back in the ring makes the whole product better. He is universally loved by the fans and consistently produces the best matches.
There's no storyline behind his bout with Rose, but there doesn't have to be. At this point, Zayn just needs to build momentum before he moves to the main roster or challenges for the NXT Championship again, and a match with Rose is a good way to do that.
The other three bouts will produce some fun moments, but none of them will affect any of the current feuds or storylines.
One person people will want to keep their eyes on is Swann. He is a talented competitor from the indy scene who is still new to the WWE Universe.
He has worked for promotions like Chikara, Dragon Gate and Evolve, so he knows his way around a ring. Unless this is the start of a push for the 24-year old, Corbin will likely get the win, but if he performs well, we could be seeing more of him in the near future.
It will be nice to see Gargano back in a WWE ring, but until he officially signs with the company, any appearance he makes will be inconsequential.
This is an interesting week for the developmental system, because most of the matches have nothing to do with any current feuds. Hopefully the action will make up for the lack of storyline development.
What are you looking forward to on this week's episode of NXT?
