Tom SunderlandJan 15, 2016

Roberto Bautista Agut emerged victorious in the ASB Classic 2016 final on Saturday, where he claimed the third ATP title of his career after opponent Jack Sock was forced to retire in the second set of their finale clash.

The American contender was dealing with with illness prior to the tournament's climax and struggled to a 6-1, 1-0 defeat in the Auckland decider after failing to keep up with the pace.

Speaking to the official ATP World Tour website after Saturday's win, Bautista Agut detailed his happiness, having overcome a packed field of professionals to claim the top prize in New Zealand:

I feel so happy. I think I had an amazing week. I had plenty of good wins, played wonderful tennis here. I feel sorry for Jack and I want to congratulate him because he had a really great year last year, and I want to wish him luck for the rest of this season.

Bautista Agut completed a hat-trick of American victories on Saturday, too, having defeated Sock's compatriots John Isner and Donald Young on the way to Saturday's final, not to mention disposing of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jiri Vesely.

The competition ended under unfortunate circumstances, but we provide a full recap of the action that was on display as Bautista Agut sealed first place in Auckland on Saturday.

Bautista Agut will undoubtedly have been pleased to take the ASB Classic crown irrespective of the method in which he did so, but it was clear from the beginning of Saturday's encounter that Sock wasn't up to scratch.

It wasn't until the sixth game of the first set that he even managed to get on the board, and even at 5-0 down, Sock was forced to hit back from trailing 30-love before he managed to pull it back to a four-game deficit.

The first set saw the 23-year-old maintain a first-serve percentage of just 35 percent, while his opponent was more than double that figure (71 percent) and claimed 93 percent of his first-serve points, per the ATP World Tour website.

Despite a slight pull-back at 5-1, Sock immediately fell victim to Bautista Agut's serve once again and surrendered a 6-1 loss in the opener. Sock compared his condition with that of an "out of body experience." Between sets, he could be heard saying "I don't feel like I'm really here," per the ATP World Tour website.

Tennis writer Chris Goldsmith knew there was something severely wrong with Sock, who appeared to be fighting the inevitable in New Zealand:

After dropping to a seventh game loss in eight played, the Nebraska native called time on his outing, and USA Today's Nick McCarvel rightly called the result a "disappointing" one:

At full fitness, it's likely Sock would have given his Spanish foe a run for his money, having taken out the likes of Kevin Anderson and top-seeded David Ferrer en route to the tournament's finale.

A case of poor timing meant this wasn't to be the youngster's year, but next week's Australian Open will give him the opportunity to quickly make up for that shortfall.
