NFL Free Agents 2016: Latest Rumors and Predictions on Kirk Cousins, Doug Martin

Danny WebsterJan 9, 2016

Doug Martin will be a hot commodity on the open market this offseason after his second plus-1,400-yard season. There's a mutual interest between Martin and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to bring him back, but the cost is up in the air.

We also touched on Friday that Kirk Cousins is going to get paid and that the Washington Redskins want to break the bank for him. They also want to get it done as soon as possible.

Here's what you need to know with these two offensive superstars.

Bucs and Martin Want To Stay Together

This is great timing for Martin. He was named to the All-Pro team on Friday and will be the most coveted running back on the open market.

While there may be many teams that would line up to pay for an All-Pro running back who is only 26 years old, it appears Martin has a desire to stay in Tampa Bay. The Bucs feel the same way, according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times:

"

How important is it to sign Doug Martin to a new deal? The NFL's No. 2 rusher is an unrestricted free agent, and there's mutual interest in a contract to keep him in Tampa Bay. It's Martin's best chance to maximize his value, so how much will the Bucs pay? Some teams are hesitant to commit big money to running backs, but Martin was a huge part of the Bucs' offensive emergence this season. It'll likely be in the range of $25 million over four years, if not more.

"

Teams certainly have some concern about how much they should pay running backs, especially in the case of one such as Martin, who has only been healthy for half of his career. But when Martin is healthy, he's one of the best running backs in the league. The touchdowns were slightly down (six) compared to the 11 he put up in 2012, but Martin averaged a career-high 4.9 yards per carry on less than 300 carries.

Paying Martin, though, will be tricky. DeMarco Murray seemed to set the benchmark at $40 million over five years when he joined the Philadelphia Eagles, so Martin could easily command $8 million annually if he wanted to. He's in the same situation as Murray, who signed his big contract when he was 26 years old last offseason.

Even though the Bucs made a shocking and baffling decision to let go of Lovie Smith, Tampa Bay is building something promising. It would be a wrong move for Martin to take the money and go elsewhere because Tampa's offense is continuing to build. With a promising offensive line, along with quarterback Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay is a great situation for Martin, and he should re-sign with the Bucs.

Redskins Want to Lock Up Cousins as Soon as Possible

It's clear the Washington Redskins want to secure Kirk Cousins as their quarterback of the future once this season is over, and it appears they're going to attack this as quickly as possible.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported that Washington has accepted the fact Cousins' new deal could be an expensive one and that the Redskins want to secure the one-time fourth-round pick long term:

"

Per sources, the Redskins intend to execute a blockbuster deal with their new franchise quarterback before the deadline to tag players in early March, but are fully prepared to franchise Cousins if they can't beat the clock.

"

Spotrac (h/t NFL Network's Rand Getlin) noted that Cousins' new deal could be as high as $20.5 million per year. This would be a hefty price tag for the Redskins to commit to a quarterback after one winning season.

It wouldn't be a shock to see the Redskins make Cousins one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, but the franchise tag would be a smarter play. Washington caught lightning in a bottle by winning the NFC East and the fact Cousins had as great a year as he had.

He needs to put together back-to-back seasons of winning football before the Redskins should think about putting that much money toward him. This is Daniel Snyder we're talking about, though. The Washington owner gave over $100 million to Albert Haynesworth. This would not be a shock, and it should be done as swiftly as the Redskins would like.
