WWE Royal Rumble 2016: Undercard Matches Fans Deserve to See

Aaron BowerJan 7, 2016

There will no doubt be a thinner card than usual at WWE's next pay-per-view, owing to the 30-man Royal Rumble extravaganza, but there are still some undercard matches fans deserve to see take place.

Expect some championships to be put on the line in Orlando's Amway Center on January 24, even if the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is set to be defended inside the Rumble match itself.

Here are three matches fans really do deserve to see take place that will hopefully round off the Rumble card and make the show go off with a bang.

Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

The Divas division feels like it has been limping along for a while now, but Charlotte's heel turn on the most recent edition of Raw could be the spark to kick things off ahead of WrestleMania season.

WWE took the right approach in playing Charlotte's turn slowly, as it caused a real explosion when she did turn on Becky Lynch.

That should now be the catalyst for Lynch to get a deserved shot at the WWE Divas Championship at the Royal Rumble, and it would be a match that would be a great addition to the card at the show.

Two former friends colliding is nothing new, especially after Paige recently turned on both Charlotte and Lynch.

But this one seems to fit a bit better when weighing up the complexity and long-term future of the Divas division, as Charlotte just seems better as a heel.

She's got such charisma inside the ring when working as a heel, and although some people have found the comparisons with her father, Ric Flair, a tad irritating, her adoption of dirty tricks to win matches just like he did will do her role as a heel no harm at all.

Lynch has been overdue a shot at the title too, so this has all the makings of something pretty decent at the Royal Rumble.

Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens

WWE has a pretty depleted roster on its hands right now, but two guys who should be able to provide a great match at the Royal Rumble are Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens.

Whether they go on to pull double duty and work the Rumble match later in the night is up in the air, but if Ambrose defends his Intercontinental Championship against Owens on the main card, expect fireworks.

They've shown they're both incredibly exciting in-ring competitors while competing against each other and varying members of the roster, so a match at a pay-per-view of this type would likely steal the show.

With a thin roster and not much potential for standout matches anywhere else, this should be the fitting finale to their mini-feud. Have Owens and Ambrose wrestle for way over 20 minutes, put their bodies on the line and leave the crowd in awe of what they're witnessing.

There's been a bit of cat and mouse with Owens and Ambrose lately, but if they settle their differences at the Rumble, it would be the match of the night, and fans wouldn't forget it in a hurry.

A Match Involving Members of the NXT Roster

Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Cesaro, Daniel Bryan and now John Cena. WWE's injury list is deepening by the week, and with a 30-man Rumble match to fill, there are not many options for feuds elsewhere on the roster to take up a slot on the card.

That's why at the upcoming Royal Rumble, fans should get another glimpse of NXT on the main roster and have a blockbuster bout featuring some of the developmental brand's biggest stars.

Naturally you don't want to take too much attention away from the storylines that are happening each and every Wednesday at Full Sail University, but why not showcase NXT to a wider audience like has happened in the past.

In September 2014, days before their bout at NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, Adrian Neville and Sami Zayn took on Tyler Breeze and Tyson Kidd in a thrilling tag match that showed the future was very bright indeed.

All four have made appearances on the main roster in various forms since, and the Royal Rumble could be the chance for Zayn in particular to get another run-out.

It's a risky move given the magnitude of the pay-per-view, but NXT could once again get a chance to steal the show at the expense of the main roster.
