Big East Week Four: Entrees, Appetizers, Cupcakes and Gut Busters

Amazing! We're already a month into the college football season. For your Saturday consumption, we present our culinary selection of entrees, appetizers, cupcakes, and for select teams and their fans, some real gut-busters.

South Florida (3-0) at Florida State (2-1): The Bulls will get on the bus to Tallahassee and depart from the "No Cupcake Zone" on Friday. Saturday they'll fight for recognition when they battle traditional power Florida State. FSU has been one of the "Big Three" in the state for more than 30 years now and has national titles as does Florida and Miami. This is all about opportunity for South Florida. The Bulls will be led by quarterback B.J. Daniels, who takes over for Matt Grothe, whose season ended with a torn ACL last week. USF's defense will have to step up in this one. FSU and its fans could be overconfident as they are ranked 18th and rate a two touchdown favorite. This is a full-blown, all-you-can-eat gut buster for USF, although FSU might regard the Bulls as a light entree.

Big Edge: Florida State

Fresno State (1-2) at Cincinnati (3-0): The Bearcats are back home and should be ready for the Bulldogs, who appear a bit down this year from their normal talent level. Tony Pike and the gang are on a roll and right now carry the Big East banner in the polls at 14 in the AP and 15 in USA Today. This team is getting noticed. Look for the scoring to continue and the Bearcats to turn Fresno into a California Cupcake.

Pittsburgh (3-0) at N.C. State (2-1): Good road test for Pitt. The Wolfpack is 2-1 with two cupcake consumptions. Pitt will have to be sharp in order to go to 4-0. If the Panthers run the football and play defense, look for them to get that fourth win and perhaps move into the top 25 in the polls. Solid entree for both teams.

Slight Edge: Pitt

Rutgers (2-1) at Maryland (1-2): Time for Greg Schiano's team to make a statement and get a nice road win. Maryland's defense is abysmal at best. The Terps barely beat James Madison in overtime and lost to Middle Tennessee, got blown out by Cal. Opportunity for the Rutgers ground game. Can be a light entree for Rutgers and a win over a name program that is down this year.

Edge: Rutgers

Rhode Island (1-1) at Connecticut (2-1): UConn needs some field time against a lesser opponent. Huge win at Baylor last week and the Huskies should keep their momentum going. This should be a most delicious cupcake for Randy Edsall and the guys. Sure the Rams will fight but this one has UConn written all over it.

Big Edge: UConn

Maine (2-1) at Syracuse (1-2): Time for the 'Cuse to get back to the .500 mark. The fans are digging Greg Paulus, who had a huge outing last week in the Northwestern thriller of a win. The Orange deserve a cupcake after that showing last week and the Black Bears will be a yummy dessert on Saturday in the Carrier Dome.

Big Edge: Syracuse

Louisville (1-1) at Utah (2-1): Gotta give the Cardinals credit, they played really, really hard last week, lost a heart breaker to Kentucky. But this trip to Utah may be a bit much for them. Utah is a two touchdown favorite and should achieve that margin. This is a bit too much of an entree for the Cards to consume and perhaps Utah looks upon Louisville as a light appetizer.

Big Edge: Utah

There you have it tailgaters and watch-at-home hogs. Fire up those grills and chow down! It's another marvelous football Saturday on tap. Check back on Monday when Professor Tom passes out the grades from this football feast!
