Sarkisian Eyeing Assistant NFL Openings
Tuesday, Jan. 5
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Sarkisian is "putting out feelers to NFL teams and expressing interest in becoming a [quarterbacks] coach or [offensive coordinator]."
Prior to serving as the head coach at USC, Sarkisian was a quarterbacks coach for the Trojans, the head coach at the University of Washington and the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders. Sarkisian was also in the running for the Raiders' vacant head coaching position in 2007, but he ultimately deferred an opportunity with the Silver and Black to remain at USC in an assistant coaching capacity.
USC fired Sarkisian following a 3-2 start laced with controversy regarding the coach's health. According to ESPN.com, USC athletic director Pat Haden asked Sarkisian to take a leave of absence because it was "clear to [him] that he was not healthy."
Sarkisian was fired shortly thereafter on Oct. 12, and Clay Helton took over as the program's interim head coach.
In early December, Sarkisian reportedly filed a lawsuit against USC and alleged "the school discriminated against him because of his alcoholism," according to the Los Angeles Times' Nathan Fenno.
Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman provided his take on Sarkisian's past and the new information regarding a possible NFL return:
Following an up-and-down ride at USC that ended in a rough ouster, Sarkisian could be served well if he returns to the NFL and climbs the coaching ranks once more.
