Liverpool Transfer News: Jurgen Klopp Discusses Leroy Sane, Joel Matip Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenDec 30, 2015

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted at the possibility of signing Schalke 04 starlets Leroy Sane and Joel Matip during the upcoming January transfer window, although the former Borussia Dortmund boss won't only be eyeing Bundesliga players.

Speaking to German tabloid Bild (h/t Daily Express' Uche Amako), Klopp also addressed the way rampant transfer speculation is particularly “wild” in England, saying:

"

Are we interested in Sane and Matip? They are Schalke players, right? It is correct that we are looking at all options.

I do not have any plans to only bring in players from the Bundesliga.

There is nothing wilder than transfer rumours in England.

You can insist 10 times that you will not sign a new goalkeeper, yet the papers will write the next day that you are interested in signing a goalkeeper, or perhaps even two.

Teenage superstar Sane is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in the Bundesliga, while the 24-year-old Matip has emerged as a consistent and dependable centre-back, a position of need for the Reds.

Joe Gomez was an early standout in the 2015-16 campaign before suffering a serious injury, setting the tone for a rash of setbacks to Liverpool's defence. While Gomez still ranks as a top talent at the position, Klopp is unfamiliar with the youngster―he suffered the injury shortly after the German was appointed.

Sane is the name fans will be most excited about, however. The 19-year-old is a versatile forward who boasts enough pace and trickery to play out wide but can also move inside and contribute in front of goal. Here's a look at some of his highlights:

Already a German international, he has scored four goals and added four assists in just 11 Bundesliga starts this season, per WhoScored.com, and given his young age, he will only improve as time goes on.

Sane seems highly unlikely to move in January, as he is just starting to establish himself as a top forward, and per the Anfield Chat, his agent has already ruled out a transfer in the near future.

That doesn't mean the Reds won't keep their eye on the youngster, or make an offer in January. The Premier League's new TV deal has given the likes of Liverpool tremendous financial power, and they have the ability to offer Schalke the kind of deal they simply can't turn down.

Sane's development has been fantastic in Gelsenkirchen so far, and the teenager can only benefit from a prolonged stay with Schalke, but if he's open to a new challenge and believes he's ready to make his mark at Anfield, a January move could be on the cards.

Matip is a more realistic target, and Bleacher Report UK's Jack Lusby would love to see the defender at Anfield in 2016:

Meanwhile, full-back Jose Enrique's time with Liverpool is set to come to an end, and the only decision left for the Reds is whether he will leave the club in January or as a free agent next summer, per James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo.

The Spaniard can sign a pre-contract with any interested club in January, but Liverpool may not be keen to continue paying his hefty weekly wages for another six months, per Pearce:

"

Enrique hasn’t been named in a single first-team squad since the German’s appointment with youngster Brad Smith having established himself as Alberto Moreno’s deputy.

Liverpool must decide whether to keep the defender until the end of the season or pay up the final months of his £65,000 per week contract.

The 29-year-old’s only football this season has been for Liverpool Under-21s and he played the full 90 minutes in their friendly against Fleetwood at the Kirkby Academy on Tuesday.

"

Perhaps a deal can be struck with the 29-year-old to release him from his contract in January, allowing him to start the next chapter of his career instantly instead of wasting another six months at Anfield.

Per Pearce, Enrique has been training with the first-team squad, and Klopp has seen enough to know he won't be a part of his team in the future.
