Tipton reportedly received threatening text messages from his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend and went to a party at her house to check on her safety, firing the assault rifle into the air from the driveway.
Tipton then fled the scene of the alleged crime in a Jeep with his brother, Cortez Tipton, though they were pulled over a few blocks away from the scene.
He had the proper license for the handgun, according to police, and cooperated with authorities.
Tipton, 25, was released by the Colts this season after spending the past two years with the team. He rushed 15 times for 38 yards in 16 games and also caught 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.
