Baldwin Works Out for Panthers

Tuesday, Dec. 15

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Baldwin worked out for the undefeated Carolina Panthers on Tuesday.

Baldwin, a first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2011, recorded 44 catches for 607 yards in three seasons with the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. He was waived by the 49ers prior to the 2014 season and has been out of the league ever since a failed physical with the Detroit Lions.

Despite their perfect 13-0 record, the Panthers could use another pair of hands after their leading pass-catcher, tight end Greg Olsen, suffered a knee injury that could keep him out of Sunday's game even though ESPN.com reported the 30-year-old seems "optimistic about his chances of playing," per RotoWire (via CBSports.com).

Carolina's passing offense led by quarterback Cam Newton has been one of the bottom units in the NFL, ranking 25th. Much of the team's offensive success is from a rushing attack that averages over 140 yards per game. The passing game has struggled since seeing No. 1 wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin go down with a season-ending ACL injury during the preseason.

Through 13 games, the team's leading wide receiver is veteran Ted Ginn Jr. with 37 receptions for 645 yards. Olsen had 65 catches for 969 yards before the injury.

At 6'4", Baldwin could provide some size to the Panthers' receiving group that just lost the 6'6" Olsen. Other than 6'5" rookie Devin Funchess, no other Panthers receiver is taller than 6'1". Veteran Jerricho Cotchery and second-year man Corey Brown are 6'1" and 6'0", respectively. None of them has more than 29 receptions.

In order to keep their perfect season alive and move deep into the playoffs, the Panthers will need their passing game to help add some variety to their offense, though Baldwin most likely won't be the team's solution for that.
