Monday Recap
The Philippine Mavericks took an early lead over the hosts in a tight second match on Monday as America's James Blake edged a shootout 6-5 against Goran Ivanisevic.
France's Kristina Mladenovic then put the Royals in control with a 6-2 victory over Ajla Tomljanovic before another close encounter in the mixed doubles ended 6-5(7-4) in the Mavericks' favour.
Going into the penultimate set—the men's doubles—the Royals held a narrow 16-14 lead.
The two pairs exchanged service holds before Federer and Marin Cilic lost a crucial service game to go 5-4 down after a couple of sloppy missed volleys.
Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Treat Huey served out for a 6-4 victory to tie things up at 20-20 going into the final set, per IPTL:
With Federer serving first, he and Karlovic exchanged the opening six games before the Croat edged 4-3 ahead thanks to an impressive break.
Karlovic threw down some huge serves to consolidate the break and move the Mavericks within a game of victory.
Federer held to force Karlovic to serve for the match, and he duly did what was needed to inflict defeat upon the Royals in front of their home crowd.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Kirsten Flipkens got the Japan Warriors off to a decent start in the first match of the day as they beat Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza 6-4 in the mixed doubles.

However, the Aces claimed the momentum emphatically as Agnieszka Radwanska won her set 6-1 before Fabrice Santoro blew Thomas Enqvist away with a 6-0 victory.
The men's doubles was a much closer affair as Bopanna and Ivan Dodig edged out Herbert and Leander Paes 6-5(7-2).
But the Warriors could not claw back the deficit and eventually went down 25-18 despite Philipp Kohlschreiber's 6-3 win over Bernard Tomic in the final set.
