Titans Could Replace Webster After Consecutive Disappointing Seasons
Sunday, Dec. 13
A high-ranking source within the Titans organization told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network: "When you've won five games in the last two years, no one is safe. That includes Ruston Webster."
Webster's Tenure Marked By Poor Decision-Making
Webster, 53, has spent four seasons serving as the team's general manager. This past offseason was his most successful, as he added franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota and promising wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham through the draft and signed productive defensive veterans Brian Orakpo and Perrish Cox, among others.
However, as Kuharsky noted: "Webster's overall personnel record isn’t good enough. ... He needs to do far better in the draft, particularly in the second and third rounds."
He's also had to work with three different head coaches in four different seasons, including two—Mike Munchak and Ken Whisenhunt—who were appointed by ownership, per Kuharsky.
Were Webster to be let go, he would be the second general manager this season to lose his job, as the Detroit Lions fired general manager Martin Mayhew in November. But Kuharsky believes Webster will ultimately keep his job through 2016, giving him one more draft and free-agency period to prove his worth in the position.
If the Titans decide to make sweeping changes, such as bringing in a new coaching staff, however, it seems unlikely that Webster will keep his position given Tennessee's struggles during his tenure as general manager.
