Matt JonesDec 11, 2015

The Micromax Indian Aces cemented their place at the top of the International Premier Tennis League standings as they enjoyed a 26-21 win over the Legendari Japan Warriors on Friday.

It was another impressive effort from the Aces, who were without star man Rafael Nadal as they made it five wins from six outings. Earlier on in the day, the OUE Singapore Slammers made sure they remained in touch with the leaders, as they completed a 30-22 win over the Philippine Mavericks.

Here’s a recap of the latest results from New Delhi, a look at some of the matches to come and how Friday's engrossing ties panned out.

Aces Keep Excellent Form Up

The tone for the Aces’ win over the Warriors was set in the early stages of their clash, as the opening two matches went the way of the league leaders.

First up, Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza proved too good for Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the mixed doubles with a 6-4 win. From there, Agnieszka Radwanska extended the Aces’ lead, beating Kurumi Nara by a comfortable 6-2 margin and giving the Warriors, who are bottom of the standings, a mountain to climb.

The Aces Twitter feed was pretty pleased with the performance of the 2012 Wimbledon finalist, as she put them in a commanding position:

There was a mini-revival from the struggling Warriors in the next set, as Leander Paes and Herbert edged past Bopanna and Ivan Dodig 6-5 in the men’s doubles leg. But the gap was still at five points going into the final two portions of the contest and fast looking insurmountable.

Fabrice Santoro then ensured that it was. The Frenchman showed his quality in the legends’ leg to wrap the match up for the Aces with a 6-3 win over Thomas Enqvist. It made the last match of the day a dead rubber, with Herbert cutting the margin down for the Warriors with a 6-3 win over Dodig.

Earlier on in the day, the Slammers were classy in their victory over the Mavericks, notching wins in all five legs. However, despite what looks a lopsided scoreline on paper, plenty of the legs played were tight affairs. Indeed, three of the matches went to tiebreaks, two of which involved the Slammers' Nick Kyrgios.

The effervescent Australian has really enjoyed himself at this tournament so far, and in the men’s doubles, playing alongside Marcelo Melo, he helped his team in getting over the line 6-5. Then in the singles, against French player Edouard Roger-Vasselin, he pulled off another narrow win in a tiebreak.

As we can see courtesy of the tournament’s official Twitter feed, the Slammers team definitely seemed to be enjoying themselves during this one:

For the Mavericks, it was a tough loss having come pretty close in a lot of the legs. However, they were without their star player Serena Williams for this one and still have a pretty respectable record overall, having won four of their seven matches.

They’ll be looking to bounce back on Monday after a couple of days rest when taking on the OBI UAE Royals on the first day of the Dubai section of the tournament. But at the moment, the Aces are looking like the team to beat in this year's IPTL.
