Legendary NFL announcer and coach John Madden was released from a San Francisco hospital Wednesday after undergoing successful open-heart surgery to repair blockages.

In a statement released by the NFL, it was revealed that the Pro Football Hall of Famer is expected to make a full recovery.

I spoke to John yesterday. He sounds great, but is frustrated about being on injured reserve for the time being. He is anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game. He's a tremendous fountain of ideas and we can't wait to get him back. We are all pleased to know that John's procedure was successful and wish him a speedy recovery.

"

The 79-year-old Madden guided the Oakland Raiders to a win in Super Bowl XI before embarking on a successful broadcasting career that ended when he retired in 2009.

Madden is also well-known for being the face of the Madden NFL video game franchise, which has dominated the market since 1988.

Although he is no longer at the NFL's forefront as an announcer, he still plays a significant role in the league's operations as a co-chair of the NFL Player Safety Advisory Panel and a chair of the Coaches Subcommittee to the Competition Committee, per NFL Communications.

Madden has been involved with the NFL since 1967 when the late Al Davis made him a linebackers coach for the Raiders.

He is a wealth of knowledge, and there is little doubt the NFL will miss his input while he is on the mend.
