Why the Chiefs can cover the spread

Kansas City is one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now and has also enjoyed a lot of recent success in the series with Oakland, going 9-3 straight up and ATS in the past 10 road meetings. The Chiefs have averaged 32 points during their winning streak while allowing an average of a little more than 12 per game.

Quarterback Alex Smith has also done an outstanding job of protecting the football during this stretch, going eight games and 283 pass attempts without throwing an interception. That is the fourth-longest streak in NFL history and one of the main reasons their offense has been so efficient without running back Jamaal Charles.

Why the Raiders can cover the spread

The Raiders are a much different team this season under first-year head coach Jack Del Rio, who is very familiar with the AFC West after serving as defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 2012 to 2014. Del Rio helped the Broncos dominate Kansas City during his time there, going 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS in six games.

Offensively, Oakland has gotten back to what made the team successful early in the season, throwing the football behind second-year quarterback Derek Carr. In last week’s 24-21 road win over the Tennessee Titans, Carr threw for 330 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, his best performance since the Raiders upset the New York Jets 34-20 as three-point home underdogs in Week 8.

Smart pick

The Chiefs may be the hotter team, but Oakland has thrived as a home underdog lately, going 5-2 SU and ATS in its last seven games under that scenario. Del Rio knows Kansas City well and will make sure his defense pressures Smith and maybe even forces him into his first interception since Week 3. Take the Raiders in another upset.

Betting trends

The visiting team is 12-5 SU and ATS in its last 17 games in this matchup.

The Raiders are 5-2 SU and ATS in their last seven games as home underdogs.

The Chiefs are 8-3 SU and ATS in their last 11 games as road favorites.
