Pharoh Cooper to Reportedly Enter 2016 NFL Draft: Latest Details, Reaction
Not only will South Carolina have to find a new coach next year, they'll have to replace their best offensive playmaker following wide receiver Pharoh Cooper's decision to enter the 2016 NFL draft.
"He definitely appreciates the opportunity to play for South Carolina, and we as parents appreciate the opportunity they gave him," his father Glen Cooper said Tuesday, per Josh Kendall of the State. "He wants to ride the wave at its high point."
The junior is the Gamecocks' runaway leader in receptions (62) and receiving yards (887) this year. He has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season. Gene Sapakoff of the Post and Courier isn't surprised by the development:
The state of the South Carolina football program likely played a role in Cooper forgoing his senior year. Steve Spurrier left in the middle of the season, which forced Shawn Elliott to take over on an interim basis. The team will also finish with its worst record since Lou Holtz's first season in 1999.
Cooper doesn't project to be one of the top wideouts in the upcoming draft, but he should hear his name called on Day 2 at the latest. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller provided his early assessment of the player:
Cooper is a dynamic pass-catcher who could help an NFL team on punt or kick returns, which will only help his draft value. In terms of speed, he cannot match Baylor's Corey Coleman, but he possesses enough breakaway ability to thrive at the next level.
There are a few issues Cooper will need to iron out—namely his route-running—but he should become a consistent aerial threat in the NFL.
