Swearinger Visits Green Bay Packers
Monday, Nov. 23
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Green Bay hosted Swearinger on Monday—perhaps looking at him as an insurance policy after Micah Hyde suffered a hip injury in Week 11's win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com confirmed the visit.
Hyde was dealing with a bad hip entering Sunday's NFC North showdown, per SiriusXM NFL Radio's Mike Clemens. The Green Bay Press-Gazette's Weston Hodkiewicz pointed out how safety Morgan Burnett has also been fighting through a nagging ankle injury.
Such circumstances threaten to challenge Green Bay's depth in the defensive backfield unless general manager Ted Thompson makes a move.
The Houston Texans originally brought in Swearinger as a second-round pick in the 2013 draft. After he appeared in 32 regular-season games and started 22 of those contests, though, Houston waived Swearinger in May.
ESPN.com's Field Yates recently mentioned how many suitors lined up for the safety at the time:
Swearinger has talent and had a knack for delivering big hits with the Texans. He doesn't have any severe injuries on his record and is only 24 years old, so the Packers are wise to at least consider bringing him aboard given their current circumstances.
At this late juncture of the season, it'd be a long shot for Swearinger to make a tremendous impact. At least he's drawing interest from one respected team and has ongoing hope to become a productive NFL player again.
