McPhee Undergoes Arthroscopic Surgery

Wednesday, Feb. 24

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Dr. James Andrews performed arthroscopic surgery on McPhee's problematic left knee.

While an official recovery timetable hasn't been established, Biggs did note McPhee is expected to be healthy when the Bears open training camp this summer.

McPhee, who mostly served as a situational rusher during his time with the Baltimore Ravens, has taken on a more prominent role with the Bears. Biggs noted he was on the field for 81.4 percent of Chicago's defensive snaps in the season's first eight games.

Getting a chance to play every down has improved his numbers and allowed him to show a little more versatility. He finished 2015 with six sacks and one interception in 14 games.

The Mississippi State product only missed four games across his four years in Baltimore. Alas, he battled a lingering knee injury that forced him to miss time during the middle stages of last season that resulted in his offseason surgery.

Should McPhee need additional recovery time, the Bears can turn to Willie Young and LaRoy Reynolds for extra snaps as part of the rotation in offseason workouts and training camp.

Biggs noted McPhee is no stranger to arthroscopic surgery on his knees, having had the procedure done twice on the right side in 2012.

Losing McPhee, who signed a five-year deal worth nearly $40 million last offseason, would be another setback for a unit that's struggled to keep points off the scoreboard for years.
