T.J. Yates, DeAndre Hopkins' Updated Fantasy Outlook with Brian Hoyer's Injury

Joe PantornoNov 20, 2015

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien announced Friday that starting quarterback Brian Hoyer will not play Sunday against the New York Jets due to a concussion, according to ESPN.com's Adam Schefter. In his place, the Texans will start perennial backup T.J. Yates.

For fantasy football owners, this could affect their decision-making in the next two days leading into Houston's Week 11 matchup. With a new starting quarterback on the fantasy market, some might take a look at adding him to their roster. Others who have the Texans' No. 1 wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, might be wary of whether or not to start him this week.

T.J. Yates

Yates hasn't been in the starting spotlight much over his five-year career. In fact, he hasn't started a game since his rookie season in 2011, going 2-3.

He hasn't thrown much in the league since then, having attempted no more than 22 passes in a single season. The numbers aren't pretty either. Since 2012, Yates has completed 57 percent of his passes with one touchdown and four interceptions.

Houston isn't exactly facing a bad defense either. The Jets are averaging just 14.7 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season, and those are against well-established starters.

Yates is going to be in for it Sunday as he will face a solid pass rush that is going to put plenty of pressure on him. Stay away from him.

DeAndre Hopkins

Hopkins has been a scoring machine, regardless of who is under center in Houston, whether it was Hoyer or Ryan Mallett. In six of nine games this season, Hopkins has recorded 15 fantasy points or more.

He was dealing with a knee injury during the week, but according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Hopkins is good to go for Week 11.

The Jets are coming off of shutdown weeks against wide receivers, allowing just two points, but they are capable of getting burned. In Weeks 8 and 9, they were torched for 39 and 41 points, respectively. So there is an opportunity for Hopkins to find success here.

As the most established receiver Houston has and with a new quarterback under center, Hopkins might be Yates' go-to guy whenever he is feeling the pressure. Start Hopkins, just like every other week.
