Manuel Oropeza Signs Contract with WWE NXT: Latest Comments and Reaction
WWE's pronounced push to make an impact south of the border continued Thursday, as the company announced the signing of Manuel Alfonso Andrade Oropeza to a developmental contract.
Oropeza, who is better known in wrestling circles as La Sombra, will report to WWE's Developmental Center with plans of debuting him in NXT. The 26-year-old lucha libre has worked on the independent circuit and New Japan Pro Wrestling for the better part of a decade, earning a reputation as one of the most electrifying performers in the business.
"Some have this business in their blood...but all have to prove they belong," Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative Triple H said in an Instagram post. "It is my pleasure to welcome Manuel Alfonso Andrade Oropeza to @WWENXT."

Oropeza is a third-generation sports entertainer, though he'll be the first member of his family to compete under the WWE umbrella. His signing comes less than a month after the surprise return of Alberto Del Rio to WWE television, which came amid longstanding rumors of some within the company wanting a Hispanic star.
Del Rio's return has largely fallen flat after defeating John Cena at Hell in a Cell, so it'll be interesting to see how quickly the company moves Oropeza up the developmental track. While not a traditionally imposing threat, Oropeza's build is not too dissimilar to former WWE champion Daniel Bryan; it's at least feasible that Oropeza could become a star if his development progresses.
Perhaps more importantly: Oropeza signing with WWE means he won't be working with Lucha Underground, Ring of Honor or any other rising promotions looking to cut into the monolith's market share.
