Detroit Lions Week 11 Stock Report

Brandon AlisogluNov 18, 2015

One win doesn't change the outlook for the Detroit Lions' season.

Or did it? The Detroit Free Press Twitter feed did some digging to determine that the Lions still have a 1.272 percent chance—excuse me, opportunity—to qualify for the postseason.

No, that win didn't change the way this season is going to end. It also didn't save head coach Jim Caldwell's job or give interim general manager Sheldon White hope that he can lock down his gig for the future.

That streak-busting 18-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers did, however, boost the stock of a few players and decreased the esteem of a couple of others.

Stock Up: CB Nevin Lawson

1 of 5

Some idiots in the media thought the loss of cornerback Rashean Mathis would open up a big hole that Aaron Rodgers would exploit for multiple touchdowns. After limiting the Packers to just 16 points, it's time for a semi-awkward mea culpa.

Nevin Lawson had never started on the outside in the NFL. Not only was his position different than normal, but he now had to deal with the league's reigning MVP.

As it turns out, it was no contest. The second-year cornerback was up to the task.

Rodgers targeted Lawson 16 times, per Pro Football Focus. He came away with a hard-fought 57 yards on seven completions and zero points. Advantage, Lawson.

Unfortunately, the young man's banner day was cut short by a head injury. It's only one game against Davante Adams, a receiver who has received more praise than he's earned, but Lawson has officially thrown his hat into the ring for Mathis' job in 2016.

Stock Down: OGs Laken Tomlinson and Larry Warford

2 of 5

Larry Warford and Laken Tomlinson looked ready to be the foundation of the offensive line moving forward just two weeks ago.

Now, both are disappointments worthy of their linemates, although they were able to finish the game without getting benched for Michael Ola.

Both of Detroit's guards allowed four quarterback hurries apiece against Green Bay, per Pro Football Focus. And neither was able to create room in the running game, with both being victimized by defenders on their way to the backfield.

This has been a truly up-and-down season for the young guards. Warford hasn't been able to sustain the level of success he enjoyed his rookie year. Tomlinson hasn't looked like an offensive lineman worthy of a first-round pick more often than not.

Stock Up: RB Ameer Abdullah

3 of 5

Talk about a roller coaster of a season.

Ameer Abdullah was the hot ticket right up until he was benched because he couldn't hold on to the ball. Now, one could easily argue that Detroit wouldn't have won in Wisconsin for the first time in a quarter-century had Abdullah not been on the field.

The NFL's Special Teams Player of the Week made the biggest splash play when he returned the second-half kickoff to the Green Bay 1-yard line. It set up Brandon Pettigrew's touchdown, which gave Detroit a lead it would never relinquish.

The rookie running back now leads the NFL in kickoff return yards and average, and has also showed off his burst in the backfield, converting surefire losses into short-gainers. Hopefully, Detroit leans more on its explosive youngster moving forward.

Stock Down: TE Eric Ebron

4 of 5

Another high draft pick did not enjoy his Sunday nearly as much.

Tight end Eric Ebron, last year's first-rounder, dropped three easy passes, with one comically bouncing off his facemask. That throw shouldn't have had so much power behind it, but Ebron has one main job (catching the ball), and he didn't do it well.

There has been plenty of fire under Ebron's seat since last season's disappointing debut. After a quick start, he's settled back into irrelevancy, as he currently sits with only 27 catches.

His blocking has improved this year, but it isn't enough to overcome his inability to make the easy catches—or enough to to make anyone forget that he was the 10th overall pick.

Stock Up: S Isa Abdul-Quddus

5 of 5

James Ihedigbo was out Sunday. Isa Abdul-Quddus was in.

The difference was noticeable.

Abdul-Quddus took advantage of his start and played like a man on fire. Wherever the ball was, Abdul-Quddus followed it like smoke, finishing with the team lead in tackles (eight).

He didn't notch any defensed passes or force any turnovers, but he handled the strong safety's most important task: limiting damage in the run game and after the catch.

There's no point in returning to Ihedgibo as the starter. Detroit already knows what he can do. So it's imperative that Abdul-Quddus get as many opportunities as possible to continue to grow and show why he should be back in 2016.
