Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars: Full Jacksonville Game Preview

Evan ReierNov 17, 2015

The Jacksonville Jaguars (3-6) are working on a short week as they host the Tennessee Titans (2-7) for an important Thursday night matchup. The crazy 22-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens last weekend has kept the Jaguars alive in the race for the AFC South.

While the Titans have had a rough season so far, quarterback Marcus Mariota has been impressive and has shredded defenses on occasion, which means the Jaguars cannot come into this game lightly.

The Jaguars have done a great job of competing in nearly every game this season, but they need to build off the wins over the Ravens and Buffalo Bills and continue to finish games if they want to be legitimate contenders for the AFC South.

Thursday night is crucial. Even with the Jaguars losing a number of games this season, a loss to the Titans would be devastating. The Jaguars are going bold and gold on Thursday, and it's time to execute on the field.

Week 10 Results and Recap

1 of 5

The Jaguars traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, to take on the Ravens in an important game for both teams. Both were in need of a win to keep their postseason hopes alive. Thanks to an incredible ending, the Jaguars were able to win, 22-20.

QB Blake Bortles looked to continue his improved season, but it didn't quite happen like that. He completed less than 50 percent, threw for less than 200 yards and seemed generally off throughout the day.

However, his two touchdowns to wide receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns and kicker Jason Myers' field goals were enough to win the game. The defense forced three turnovers, but the offense could only total 10 points off the Ravens' four total turnovers.

It was a gritty win for the Jaguars, and it was pretty much everything but "pretty." But the Jaguars were able to pull it out all the same, and they'll look to carry that momentum into Thursday.

NFL Spokesman Explains Ending to Jaguars-Ravens

The Jaguars beat the Ravens, 22-20, in a way that defied logic—and the NFL. According to the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec, NFL spokesman Michael Signora came out and said that the Jaguars' final offensive play and their game-winning kick shouldn't have happened.

Jaguars tackle Luke Joeckel was not set when the ball was snapped, which should've been a five-yard false start penalty and a 10-second runoff. That would have ended the game and given the Ravens a 20-19 win.

The referees did not call the penalty, and the play kept going. Ravens defensive end Elvis Dumervil grabbed Bortles' facemask on what should have been the final play, leading to a 15-yard penalty and another play, as NFL games can't end on a defensive penalty. That allowed Myers to knock down a 53-yard field goal for the win.

However, it's too little, too late. The Jaguars have another notch in the win column, and there's no giving it back. It shouldn't have happened, but the Jaguars can be thankful that it did.

Jaguars Wearing New Gold Jerseys for Thursday

As part of the NFL's "Color Rush" theme, the Jaguars will wear gold jerseys, while the Titans wear a solid powder blue. It's a new look for the Jaguars, and they look like a nice change of pace for a big Thursday night matchup.

The Jaguars have changed jerseys often over the years, but they've never worn anything other than teal, black or white primary uniforms. Thursday's night "Bold Rush" will change that, and it'll hopefully get the team and fans even more hyped up for an already exciting game.

DT Sen'Derrick Marks Heads to IR

According to Jaguars.com's John Oehser, defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks is headed to the injury reserve for the remainder of the season with a torn triceps. Marks, who had 8.5 sacks in 2014 and became a focal point of the defense, only played four games this season after returning from an ACL tear in 2014.

It's disappointing, but the Jaguars were able to get by decently without him. His impact on the field can't always be measured, especially in the running game, but he can hopefully recover and be ready to come back with intensity in 2016.

LB Dan Skuta and WR Allen Hurns Practice Tuesday

According to the Jaguars.com injury report, linebacker Dan Skuta practiced in a limited fashion and Hurns practiced in full on Tuesday. Hurns was able to play last Sunday, but Skuta missed the Ravens win.

Both are important players to their respective sides of the ball, and having them for Thursday would be a huge addition. Hurns seems likely to play, and Skuta also seems closer to playing than sitting out.

RB T.J. Yeldon Does Not Practice for Two Straight Days

Jaguars rookie running back T.J. Yeldon has not practiced over the past two days due to a foot injury, according to Jaguars.com. Yeldon has been the feature back this season, and not having him would limit the offense considerably.

Backup running back Denard Robinson has shown to be a useful option in the past, but his impact this season has been limited to injury and Yeldon's early promise. However, if the rookie back can't go, it'll be a good chance for Robinson to get consideration for more carries in the future.

Jaguars Running Backs vs. Titans Rush Defense

The Titans have one of the strongest pass defenses in the NFL, ranking third in the NFL with 213.8 passing yards allowed a game. However, their rush defense allows 112.3 yards per game, and the Jaguars may look to exploit that.

Whether Yeldon can go or not, the Jaguars still have option in Robinson, Bernard Pierce and Toby Gerhart as potential options to break open that defense.

The Jaguars haven't sustained a balanced offense all that often this season. But to succeed against the Titans, they may have to focus even more on the run so that when Bortles does throw, the Titans will have more trouble anticipating it.

Jaguars Secondary vs. Marcus Mariota

At this point, the Jaguars may have to face the facts. The pass rush hasn't and likely won't get to QBs consistently, and that means that the Jaguars secondary has to continue to step up.

As of late, corners Davon House and Aaron Colvin as well as safety Johnathan Cyprien have stepped up, but other members like cornerback Dwayne Gratz and safety Sergio Brown have to play consistently against Mariota.

He's young, but he's already shown that he can make just about every throw and can shred leaky defenses. The Jaguars will still try to pressure him, and they should, but the secondary has to up its game as a whole.

X-Factor: Rashad Greene

5 of 5

Wide receiver Rashad Greene has had to sit on the injury reserve for since his thumb injury against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, but now he gets to finally return. Considering Bortles already has a lot of options, Greene coming back is almost overkill.

But Greene's quickness and slot familiarity will be important for Bortles to have, especially if wide receiver Bryan Walters misses Thursday with a concussion, as seen in the Jaguars' injury report.

In Week 1's loss to the Carolina Panthers, Greene brought down seven receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. While not a volume-heavy performance, earning his first NFL TD that early was an early sign of promise.

With Hurns, Robinson and tight end Julius Thomas drawing most of the attention, Greene could find open gaps or weak links in the defense. He's quick off the snap, and his ability to be an option in the flat and over the middle counterbalances Hurns and Robinson's big-play focus.

He's a good addition to this week's offense, and it'll be interesting to see how the Jaguars get him involved. He's been healthy for a while now, so he should be ready to make an impact from the get-go.
