It was a highly entertaining match that featured plenty of action from both Ambrose and Owens. WWE provided some of the highlights:
Owens commented on the result after the match via Twitter:
"Good thing I decided to focus my energy on my IC Title during my entrance because we just had another #MontrealScrewjob tonight. That was 2!
— Kevin Owens (@FightOwensFight) November 23, 2015"
Ambrose entered Survivor Series with impressive tournament wins over Tyler Breeze and Dolph Ziggler to his credit, while KO found his way past Titus O'Neil and Neville into the semifinals.
Neither Ambrose nor Owens have won WWE's top title yet, but both have been viewed as a potential future world champions ever since the first time they set foot in a WWE ring.
They took fairly similar paths to WWE as top stars on the independent scene, and they are alike in that neither has ever been viewed as the prototypical WWE Superstar.
Because of their similarities, it was inevitable that they would feud at some point, and they certainly seemed well on their way to engaging in a rivalry prior to WWE's world title scene getting thrown for a loop.
Owens defeated Ambrose by disqualification in a match on SmackDown, and all signs pointed toward them having a match at Survivor Series with the Intercontinental Championship on the line.
When Seth Rollins suffered a serious knee injury and was forced to vacate the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, however, Ambrose and Owens were thrust into the tournament since they are two of WWE's top all-around talents.
Based on the way the tournament bracket was set up, Ambrose and Owens looked to be a on a collision course for the semifinals with Roman Reigns establishing himself as the unquestioned favorite in the other half.
The semifinal encounter between WWE's unhinged Superstar and the so-called Prize Fighter came to fruition as expected, and it certainly didn't disappoint as both men laid it all on the line for a chance to vie for the biggest honor in sports entertainment.
Both stars were legitimate candidates to pick up the win, but the creative team ultimately decided to go with Ambrose, which sets up an interesting scenario in the finals with Reigns as his opponent.
While Ambrose is a face and Owens is a heel, both wrestlers are so popular among most wrestling fans that WWE really couldn't go wrong in terms of how it booked their bout.
Both have all the tools needed to become the WWE World Heavyweight champion in the very near future, and while Ambrose earned the right to get a crack at the strap first, it is fair to assume that KO won't be far behind in that regard.
