Conflicting Reports Surround Terrapins' Interest in Kiffin

Saturday, Nov. 14

Jeff Ermann of 247Sports reported Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has met with Maryland officials; however, Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel said the school has not interviewed him and does not plan to.

Kiffin is in his second year in Tuscaloosa after head-coaching stints with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Volunteers and Southern California Trojans. But despite his recent success in Tuscaloosa—the Crimson Tide made the College Football Playoff last year and are in prime position to do so again—Ermann cited a source who said Kiffin may be on his way out regardless.

"Per a reliable source in Tuscaloosa, 'the situation has run its course,' and Kiffin seems unlikely to return next year," Ermann reported.

Under Kiffin, the Crimson Tide rank fourth in total offense and were first a year ago.

Kiffin is one of three coaches on head coach Nick Saban's staff who may leave for head-coaching vacancies along with defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, per Josh Kendall of the State, and offensive line coach Mario Cristobal, according to Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post.

The Maryland job may entice Kiffin given the team's mediocre run in recent years. The Terrapins are 2-7 this season, and the ambitious Kiffin may enjoy the challenge of turning around the program after unfulfilling tenures at Tennessee and USC.
