Hunter Tries Out for Jaguars
Friday, Nov. 13
Yates reported Hunter tried out for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who already have five running backs on their roster:
Hunter, a fourth-round pick in 2011, missed all of 2014 after suffering a torn ACL. He signed a one-year extension with the 49ers in November 2014 and returned for training camp this summer. But the team placed him on the injured reserve list and eventually released him just after the start of the season.
He was one of the top backups at his position from 2011 to 2013, compiling 1,202 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 262 carries behind starter Frank Gore, as the team reached three consecutive NFC Championship Games.
The Jaguars have plenty of options at running back but perhaps aren’t confident in their collective corps behind starter T.J. Yeldon.
When Yeldon missed the team’s Week 6 loss to the Houston Texans, backups Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson combined for just 45 yards on 16 carries. Yeldon, however, has been as reliable as advertised as the team’s second-round draft selection in the spring. He has reached the end zone just twice but has compiled 589 all-purpose yards in seven games.
The Jaguars offense has improved to 20th overall, up from 31st a year ago, but has much work to do to shake its stigma as one of the league's worst. Hunter won’t be the end-all answer, but if he can return to form, he may be able to share the running load and free up the rest of the offense.
