Malcolm Jenkins Failed to Disclose Concussion to Eagles Coaches vs. Cowboys

Tim DanielsNov 12, 2015

Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins admitted Thursday that he suffered a concussion during the first half of the team's victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday but didn't immediately alert anybody on the staff.

Josh Paunil of Birds 24/7 passed along comments from the defensive back about the troublesome situation as the NFL works to combat head injuries.

"I was concussed in the second quarter but didn't tell coaches until after the game," Jenkins said.

"I kind of had an idea, but my symptoms went away," Jenkins continued, via Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com, "so I kind of kept it to myself."

Despite having a concussion, Jenkins said he was healthy enough to keep playing.

"I wasn't going to put myself in harm's way," Jenkins said. "I felt like I was good enough to compete. I was aware of everything, I wasn't forgetting anything. I didn't black out or anything. So I just kind of kept it to myself."

“This was my first concussion ever," Jenkins said, per Zach Berman of Philly.com, "You usually see the more obvious ones where guys get knocked out."

Berman reported Jenkins returned to practice Thursday to prepare for this weekend's game against the Miami Dolphins. He missed the previous two days of work while going through the concussion protocol, per Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com.

While the NFL has stated the rate of concussions fell by 25 percent last season, those numbers are based only on the injuries that are reported. As Jenkins' situation shows, some players decide to play through the issue if it's not detected.

Nevertheless, Jenkins has made it through the concussion protocol and could be back on the field Sunday as the Eagles look to get above .500 after a 4-4 start.
