Greg Hardy NFL Reinstatement Hearing Details Revealed by Deadspin Report

Mike ChiariNov 11, 2015

Days after Deadspin released a report showing photos of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy's ex-girlfriend following an alleged domestic violence incident last year, it published a 126-page transcript Wednesday of the hearing that led to Hardy's NFL reinstatement.

According to Diana Moskovitz, Puja Patel and Kyle Wagner of Deadspin, Hardy's lawyer—Frank Maister—argued in favor of his client's reinstatement to a panel that included NFL Senior Vice President Adolpho Birch, Senior Labor Relations Counsel Kevin Manara, Executive Vice President Jeffrey Pash and Senior Adviser Lisa Friel.

The hearing stemmed from the fact Hardy spent all but one game of the 2014 NFL season on the commissioner's exempt list for a May 2014 incident that resulted in the defensive end being found guilty of assaulting and communicating threats to then-girlfriend Nicole Holder.

The charges were eventually dismissed when Holder opted against taking part in the appeal, but the situation was back in the news last week when Moskovitz released photos of a badly bruised Holder taken the night of the alleged incident, as seen (warning: the following link contains graphic images and NSFW language) here.

The league eventually reinstated Hardy and suspended him 10 games before it ultimately reduced his ban to four games.

Per Moskovitz, Patel and Wagner, Maister's account of the night in question featured Holder slipping and falling into a bathroom wall rather than being thrown into it by Hardy:

"

There is a scale on the floor there. And when I went into the bathroom, and this is just me, I turned around and I hit my heal on the back of that scale. And it is my absolute sincere belief that she tripped backwards over the scale and fell backwards, and either up against the wall, but like, you know, and then it's only a short area so she held herself. And I cannot prove that that's what happened. But she ended up in the bathtub.

"

At another point in the transcript, Maister accused Holder of being the aggressor by "punching, kicking, scratching and hitting" Hardy. He also made mention of Hardy being worried that Holder would attempt to kill herself.

After that, Maister painted Holder's attempts to avoid police on the street after the incident as an admission of guilt:

"

Nicole Holder comes out of the apartment building. There is two police cars there. What does she do? She takes a look at the police officers and she starts running away from the police officers down the street. And there is two policemen chasing after her saying, 'Hey Nicole, stop, stop, stop.'

She doesn't stop until they each tell her three times. And it's a truism the law allows you to make an inference that flight from the police is consciousness of guilt.

"

Maister's account differs from the one offered in Moskovitz's previous article. In that report, officer Christopher Martin, who was among those to speak with Holder that night, revealed Holder said that "if she ever did anything to damage his career that [Hardy] would kill her."

Hardy signed with the Cowboys this past offseason, and his short time with the team has been tumultuous to say the least.

While the 27-year-old former Pro Bowler has excelled to the tune of four sacks in four games, he has been the subject of controversy, including a sideline blowup that featured his getting into a shouting match with teammate Dez Bryant during a Week 7 loss to the New York Giants.

Also, in the face of criticism following the release of Holder's photos, Hardy changed his Twitter handle to "Perfection" and briefly altered his bio too, as seen in this screen cap courtesy of Twitter user Adam Mumma:

Despite all the outside noise Hardy has attracted and created, the Cowboys—most notably owner Jerry Jones—have expressed support for the star pass-rusher, per Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram.

The NFL has yet to comment on the new developments that have been released regarding Hardy's situation over the past week.
