Joakim Soria Reportedly Agrees to 3-Year Deal with Kansas City Royals

Adam WellsNov 11, 2015

Veteran reliever Joakim Soria has agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals.

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reported it's a three-year agreement, and CBS Sports' Jon Heyman confirmed the report, adding that the deal will be worth $25 million.

On Nov. 11, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reported the Boston Red Sox had shown at least some level of interest in Soria. On Nov. 10, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reported two of Soria's former teams, the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, had also been looking at the right-hander.

A lot of relievers tend to be volatile in free agency, and Soria is no exception. He has had Tommy John surgery twice in his career, most recently in 2012, and last year was the first time since 2011 he reached 50 innings pitched.

The upside for Soria is terrific, as he posted a 2.53 ERA with 24 saves and 64 strikeouts in 67.2 innings for Detroit and Pittsburgh last season. Now he returns to a World Series-winning Royals team where he spent the first five years of his career.
