Schefter: Campbell "Highly Unlikely" to Return This Year

Wednesday, Nov. 11

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported four teams tried to lure Campbell out of retirement before the Colts decided to kick tires on the veteran quarterback, only to be rebuffed.

Colts in Need of Backup QB Behind Matt Hasselbeck

Wednesday, Nov. 11

Campbell last played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, appearing in four games and going 11-of-19 for 74 yards. His last NFL start came in 2013 with the Cleveland Browns.

Even in his best years with the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders, Campbell was for the most part an average NFL quarterback. Now, he's 33 years old and well past his prime.

While Colts fans will see this for what it is—a desperation move by the team—they have to do something in order to address their hole at quarterback. They announced Tuesday that Luck has a lacerated kidney and abdominal tear, which will keep him out up to six weeks.

Indianapolis has Alex Tanney on its practice squad, but elevating him to the active roster to serve as Hasselbeck's understudy would arguably be a worse decision than signing Campbell.

In truth, the Colts would hope Campbell—or any other player they sign—never sees the field in 2015. Otherwise, it would mean Hasselbeck got injured as well or he is playing so poorly a change is necessary. Either scenario would be a huge problem for Indianapolis.

Much like during Peyton Manning's injury-plagued 2011 season, the Colts are again finding out the hard way how quickly fortunes can turn when a starting quarterback goes down.
