Philadelphia Eagles Week 10 Stock Report
Dramatic, overtime victories against division rivals—not unlike the one the Philadelphia Eagles just experienced against the Dallas Cowboys—tend to send a team's stock spiking through the roof.
With one win, the Eagles are back on the map in the NFC East, just one game back of first place. They also have all the momentum in the world after the thrilling victory on Sunday night, the club's third win in their last four games.
Yet if the Eagles are to continue building on their resurgent portfolio, it will require the growth of certain individuals in the win over the Cowboys to carry over into next week and beyond.
Some great performances helped propel Philadelphia to its crucial victory, and rest assured those players who stepped up in Week 9 will be counted on again—that is, if the Eagles are to continue climbing in the standings. We take a look at a few of the players who made the last win possible, and whose stocks must continue to rise to give their team a fighting chance in the playoff race.
Stock Up: Sam Bradford
1 of 5
If the Eagles are going anywhere this season, it stands to reason they're going to need their quarterback.
Sam Bradford took another step forward against the Cowboys on Sunday. It's not merely his line that was impressive—a 69.4 completion percentage for 295 yards, an 8.2 average and one touchdown to zero interceptions and a single sack. It was the signal-caller's leadership in the fourth quarter and overtime en route to the key victory.
The sixth-year veteran demonstrated poise and accuracy unlike what he's shown through the first half of the season in the win in Dallas, although it's not as if his performance came from nowhere. Bradford has given glimpses into his potential throughout the season and in particular over the past six games or so.
What Bradford has lacked—and what will be required for his stock to continue rising—is consistency. Sunday was a great start, as from start to finish the former No. 1 overall draft pick completed passes and kept mistakes to a minimum.
Stock Up: DeMarco Murray
2 of 5
For one week, at least, there shouldn't be any question as to who is the Eagles' No. 1 running back. With his most productive game yet in midnight green, DeMarco Murray proved he can be the workhorse back for Philadelphia's offense.
Not that it should come as any surprise that the NFL's reigning rushing champion can succeed in any offense. However, doubts were growing as Murray has been consistently outplayed by backup Ryan Mathews.
Mathews again was the more productive player per touch on Sunday, but Murray far exceeded him by volume, gaining 161 yards of total offense on the ground and through the air. The two-time Pro Bowler carried 18 times for 83 yards and a touchdown and tacked on six catches for 78 yards for good measure.
Murray is still capable of toting the rock and at a high level. That's good, because the Eagles offense is going to need all the help it can get.
Stock Up: Jordan Matthews
3 of 5
Just when you might be starting to wonder whether Jordan Matthews could be effective out of the slot without a legitimate threat on the outside, he responds with his best game of the season.
Matthews hadn't eclipsed 60 yards receiving in the previous five games. His last was his worst of 2015, with just three receptions for 14 yards. But on Sunday, the second-year wideout racked up nine catches for 133 yards, including the 41-yard, game-winning catch-and-run. Perhaps most important of all, he didn't put a single ball on the carpet after being plagued by drops throughout the year.
Given that Philadelphia's next leading wide receiver is Josh Huff with 15 catches or Riley Cooper with 212 yards, Matthews' becoming a viable threat in the aerial attack is imperative. Otherwise, who else will Bradford have to turn to?
Its only one game, but this was a huge turnaround for Matthews. The Eagles can only hope it continues.
Stock Up: Dennis Kelly
4 of 5
Maybe the Eagles have some depth along the offensive line after all, at least at offensive tackle.
Ever since Chip Kelly was hired as head coach, we've only seen Dennis Kelly at guard, the results of which have been less than ideal. On Sunday, the fourth-year lineman got a chance to start at right tackle, where it's worth noting he played quite capably.
Perhaps that shouldn't have come as such a huge surprise. Kelly played tackle at Purdue, and in his rookie year of 2012 with the Eagles, the fifth-round pick held his own in 10 starts. His move to guard in recent seasons was out of necessity, but Kelly never seemed to take to it very well.
If Sunday's win over the Cowboys was any indication, the 25-year-old is much better suited to line up on the outside. That's good to know, because even if Jason Peters returns from injury in time for Week 10, there's no telling when the Eagles will need a fill-in at tackle. If nothing else, it appears they may have found the right guy for the job.
Stock Up: Kiko Alonso
5 of 5
The bad news is the Eagles have lost impressive rookie Jordan Hicks for the season. The good news is the defense has no shortage of quality interior linebackers on the roster.
One of those being Kiko Alonso, who was in action for the first time on Sunday since Week 2. Alonso wasn't great in his return, recording just one tackle and no other plays of consequence in limited snaps in the victory.
That being said, the fact that Alonso played at all and was not lost for the season as feared earlier on was a step in the right direction itself. Furthermore, now that Hicks is out, it paves the way for more playing time for the 2013 PFWA Defensive Rookie of the Year to carve out a bigger role in Philadelphia's defense.
As far as Alonso is concerned, it's not a question of talent, but instead one of health and conditioning. Hicks was a huge blow, but to be able replace him with a player of this caliber is rare. Alonso may not be ready to play a full game's worth of snaps already in Week 10, but before long he could be the stabilizing force in the middle of the Eagles defense—just like was expected when he was acquired in an offseason trade.
