2016 NFL Mock Draft: Predicting Round 1 Landing Spots for NCAA's Top Prospects

Joe PantornoNov 11, 2015

While things are heating up with the release of the College Football Playoff rankings, it is also signifying the last leg of the college football season as we draw ever closer to the NFL draft.

Some of the NCAA's top talent has already asserted itself at the top of the draft order, it is just a question of which NFL teams are going to be there to take them. Other college prospects have just a few more weeks to make a final push into first-round consideration.

Here is my latest mock draft, where the draft order was determined using the current NFL standings and picks were made depending on each team's needs.

If the Cleveland Browns continue their descent to the bottom of the league, they'll have a top-two pick in which a quarterback, most likely Memphis' Paxton Lynch, will go so high. Offensive skill players like Lynch will be few and far between in the first round as this year's draft looks to be dominated by defense.

With such a bevy of talent from the secondary to the defensive line, NFL teams have a great chance to bolster their defenses next year with some young talent.

One of those top prospects has been roaming the secondary in Gainesville, as cornerback Vernon Hargreaves could rise to a top-five selection come April.

Florida's main pass defender has been extremely solid this season, leading the team with four interceptions while showing the ability to become a complete shutdown defender.

Gators associate head coach Randy Shannon is extremely high on Hargreaves, as he told TampaBay.com's Matt Baker: "I've been around the great ones. He can be one of the great ones. He was a little jitterbug growing up. He was very fast with the football in his hand, making plays. He just took the other route."

An athletic corner that can jump almost any route coming his way, Hargreaves looks like the kind of player that can tell where a play is going before it develops. That's a hot commodity for NFL teams that are lacking in the secondary.

No team has lacked more in the past decade than the Jacksonville Jaguars, who need help all throughout the roster. But ensuring a stout pass defense would be a step in the right direction for a unit that has shown some bright spots this year.

Add that to the fact that Hargreaves could stay in his home state of Florida with the Jaguars, and things could be looking up in Jacksonville very soon.
