Yankees Reportedly Under Consideration for Potential Cuba Spring Training Games

Tim DanielsNov 10, 2015

The New York Yankees are reportedly one of around 10 teams being considered for spring training games in Cuba should Major League Baseball receive final clearance from the United States government to allow the foreign exhibitions.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported many organizations requested the opportunity to play games in Cuba in the spring, but some have dropped out as they needed to lock in dates. If given clearance, a lottery is expected to determine which teams will take part.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred replied "I hope so" when asked Tuesday about whether the Cuba showcase will happen in 2016, according to the New York Post.

The report noted teams frequently held spring activities in Cuba in the 1950s before Fidel Castro took power. The franchise that most recently held a game there was the Baltimore Orioles in 1999. In July, the U.S. and Cuba restored diplomatic relations, potentially opening the door for spring training games in Cuba.

One reason for the widespread interest from front offices in the possible Cuba games is getting their franchises in the spotlight in a country that develops a lot of baseball prospects. The Cuban national team has enjoyed international success, including three gold medals since 1992.

Any inside track to signing some of the talented players coming out of the country is a bonus. It could also add some spice and excitement to what's otherwise a rather routine buildup to the regular season.
