Sammy Watkins, Tyrod Taylor, LeSean McCoy's Post-Week 9 Fantasy Advice

Matt FitzgeraldNov 8, 2015

The Week 9 return of quarterback Tyrod Taylor seemed to spark the Buffalo Bills offense, but breakout performances by LeSean McCoy and, especially, Sammy Watkins were even more noteworthy.

Sunday's AFC East showdown against a talented Miami Dolphins defense showed glimpses of what Buffalo can do when firing on all cylinders with Taylor under center. All three of these Bills have battled injuries early in the year, but they showed significant promise to warrant further fantasy consideration moving forward.

Read on for roto advice on the Bills' offensive trio, along with their stat lines from Sunday's contest at Ralph Wilson Stadium that resulted in a 33-17 Buffalo victory.

Sammy Watkins

Further proof will be required before boosting Watkins to WR1 or even WR2 fantasy status, but his dazzling display versus Miami at least showed glimpses of the upside the 2014 draft's No. 4 overall pick has.

Watkins showed his long speed in getting behind Dolphins star cornerback Brent Grimes on a 63-yard touchdown and even showed some style off before the reception, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport:

This is the type of swagger and ability that made the Bills covet Watkins and trade a future first-round draft pick for him in the first place. Fragility still looms as a concern, but with Taylor demonstrating a willingness to lean on Watkins, he's worth a flex flier for the time being.

The problem is it may be difficult for the second-year stud to carry his momentum forward in Week 10. New York Jets superstar Darrelle Revis will mark Watkins and may well shut him down, especially since the Jets won't have to account for Percy Harvin.

Tyrod Taylor

In two-QB fantasy formats, don't hesitate to start Taylor. His mobility alone merits him as a weekly fixture in such lineups. For daily fantasy and yearlong leagues with only one signal-caller deployed, Taylor is a bit more of a risk-reward proposition.

He is among the biggest bargains in daily fantasy, yet the Bills may not throw the ball often enough for him to produce with the NFL's other elite options, even with the rushing yards he produces.

Matchups should dictate whether Taylor sees action in one-QB formats. Although he may struggle to find success through the air against the Jets on Thursday, he may use his athleticism to extend plays and burn the Jets as a ball-carrier if Revis and Co. play lockdown coverage.

The good news is Taylor, after missing two starts with a sprained MCL, showed he could take off as an effective runner in Week 9. His healthy completion percentage also improved in a pinpoint display of accuracy.

LeSean McCoy

The real "Shady" came to play Sunday when he scampered to the end zone on a breathtaking 48-yard jaunt.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan loves to ground and pound but has seen McCoy deal with a nagging hamstring injury all year. He isn't the most thickly built back, which may hurt his TD production—especially since massive rookie Karlos Williams is fully capable of finding pay dirt, which he did twice Sunday with only nine carries.

Since he's been out of action and not quite himself when he has been on the gridiron in 2015, McCoy is a current RB2 whom fantasy owners should deploy with caution.

A high volume of touches is bound to be there if McCoy is healthy, but that's a big "if" at this juncture. The 27-year-old left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury, the Bills announced.
