Tuesday Recap
Djokovic began with intent as he calmly dictated the opening rally of the match before taking the point with a volleyed drop shot, per TennisTV:
The Brazilian put up a valiant effort in the first set, though, and even broke the world No. 1, but the Djoker won two breaks of his own to secure it 7-5.
The second set was similarly tight, following serve with neither able to make the breakthrough until at 4-3; the Serbian finally clinched the key break to earn the chance to serve for the match, and from there, the result was never in doubt.
Wawrinka cruised through the first set thanks to Tomic's complete inability to challenge his serve. The Australian earned just one chance to break, which he failed to convert, while, according to ATP's live scoring, Wawrinka won a staggering 88 per cent of the points on his first serve.
The second set was a much more even contest with neither player being broken, though the Swiss star was forced to save four break points. He also saved a set point, per TennisTV:
However, Wawrinka showed a clinical edge to see out a hard-fought tiebreaker and progressed to the third round.
Ferrer had a more straightforward time of it against Dolgopolov. The Spaniard swept the Ukrainian aside, breaking him twice in each set without conceding a single opportunity to be broken.
Gilles Simon needed three sets to overcome Benoit Paire. Simon broke twice and Paire once in the opener before the latter reversed the scoring in the second set.
Simon was ruthless in the final set, though, and barely gave Paire an inch as he raced to a 6-1 victory.
Back in the first round, Jeremy Chardy had to show great resilience to fend off compatriot Lucas Pouille. Pouille took the only break in the first to pull a set ahead, but Chardy fought his way back into the match well and finished strongly 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Frenchman has a tough task on his hands in the next round when he takes on Kei Nishikori on Wednesday, while Borna Coric's triumph over Fernando Verdasco earns him the right to take on Murray.
Nadal and Roger Federer will also take to the court in what looks set to be an excellent day of tennis.
