Michael Owen Scores Late Winner As Man United Beat Man City 4-3

Andrew JordanSep 20, 2009

In what has been the match of the year so far in the English Premier League, Manchester United beat Manchester City 4-3 on a stoppage time goal by Michael Owen.

In a game with a tremendous build-up due to City buying multiple players during this summer's transfer window, including former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez, the match was everything that anybody could have hoped for. There were goals early and late in the match, including the game winner during the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Early on in the match, United were given a great chance off of a throw-in, as Patrice Evra was able to throw it to Wayne Rooney, who weaved between City's defenders and put the ball past City keeper Shay Given and gave Manchester United an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of the match.

After the goal, United went back onto the attack with several chances on goal, but City were not out of this match. In the 16th minute, Tevez was able to feed fellow Man City newcomer Gareth Berry with a pass with Man United keeper Ben Foster completely out of position, as Berry scored on a simple tap, tying the game at one at the 16th minute.

As the game continued, United and City started to exchange chances, but after United reclaimed possession, Tevez went in on a clumbsy tackle from behind on Rio Ferdinand, causing Tevez to be booked in the 27th minute.

Nine minutes later, Tevez became the victim of a booking, as Anderson went in on Tevez, earning him a Yellow Card.

At the end of the first half, Nemanja Vidić got booked for a tackle on Micah Richards, and Tevez got a great chance at the end of the half to put City in front, but he hit the outside of the post from about eight yards out, as City and United went into the half with the score tied at one.

At the beginning of the second half, United retook the lead as Giggs sent in a low cross that found Darren Fletcher, who put it into the back of the net to give United a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute.

City responded just three minutes later, however, as Craig Bellamy thundered in the equalizer with an unstoppable shot into the top right corner, knotting the score at two all.

Afterwards, United once again went back onto the offensive, as they continued to get great chances on the City goal, but Given continued to deny United from getting the ball behind him, and the game remained tied at two.

Evra was fouled by Shaun Wright-Phillips in the 81st minute, though, which gave Giggs a chance to get United the lead. He was able to deliver a great cross, which once again found Fletcher, as he once again headed the ball behind Given and gave United a 3-2 lead.

As the match headed towards stoppage time, it appeared that United would win the first round of this season's Manchester Derby, but at the beginning of stoppage time, Ferdinand tried a ridiculous scoop-pass along the sideline, which Martin Petrov intercepted and fed to Bellamy, who sprinted beyond Ferdinand and was able to beat Foster and stunningly tied the game up at three.

John O'Shea got fouled by Tevez in what would be United's final chance of the match, and off of a free kick, Giggs got the ball, and fed to a breaking Michael Owen, who was all alone in the penalty box. As soon as Owen got possession, he fired a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net, giving United a stunning 4-3 win, and causing the crowd at Old Trafford to explode.

With the win, United have won arguably the most exciting Manchester Derby, and have showed City that they still are the best team in Manchester.
