John Cena, Brock Lesnar, the Undertaker and More from the Caged Mailbag

Alfred KonuwaOct 22, 2015

WWE has been suspiciously quiet with its WrestleMania 32 plans as the event draws near. With just three months until the Royal Rumble, there isn't even an early favorite.

WWE just came off a loaded Raw featuring several legends near the site of WrestleMania, and there was still no major announcement. Not even a tease. That has to be considered at least a minor troll job, right?

With John Cena hosting his first United States Championship open challenge on a pay-per-view, perhaps WWE is saving its big moment for Sunday's Hell in a Cell 2015.

John Cena's Next Challenger?

"

Who do you think will challenge for the US Title Sunday and do you foresee a lengthy beat down post match of Cena?.. https://t.co/fYVLw9NwRL

The door seems wide-open for Dean Ambrose to challenge and defeat Cena. Until recently, Ambrose was slotted to be on the pre-show to battle the Wyatts alongside Randy Orton. With Orton suddenly out of the picture due to an injury, Ambrose is once again left in no man's land.

Ambrose's character currently has little direction, and he fits the description of somebody who could greatly benefit from defeating Cena during an open challenge that Cena will likely lose. If Ambrose accepted the challenge and won, it would bring the open challenge full circle, since he was Cena's first challenger the night after WrestleMania.

Ambrose still has yet to win a big match that rivals that of his Shield brethren. A win over Cena will allow him to be more than just the lovable loser of the Shield alumni. A possible heel turn that involves Ambrose injuring Cena and putting him out of action could also be the fresh coat of paint his character needs to reach the next level.

Say Yes! To This Test?

"

@ThisIsNasty Who can beat Cenathis Sunday and it NOT be considered a disappointment considering there has been no build up to the match?

The United States Championship open challenge never really has a buildup, nor does it need one. The intrigue of this concept is the element of surprise. The fact that the latest open challenge will be held at a pay-per-view is enough of a buildup, as it heightens expectations.

These open challenges have been going on for so long that in order for Cena's next opponent to really be a worthwhile surprise, it would have to be somebody from outside the main roster. With WWE's ratings continuing to free-fall, Cena's mystery challenger creates an opening for a big name to return and give a possible spark to television moving forward.

An Internet-approved choice like Cesaro or Ambrose would go over well in an underrated wrestling hotbed like Los Angeles, but a name like Daniel Bryan would be a surefire home run.

Bryan has said time and again that he has been cleared by doctors for a possible in-ring return, as he said on WFAN's Boomer and Carton show, but WWE seems to be taking extra precautions before allowing Bryan to wrestle for the company again, if ever.

If the two sides are able to reach some type of agreement, Bryan seems to be the most realistic big-name challenger, right up there with Chris Jericho.

Roman's Reign: Coming Soon?

"

@ThisIsNasty should roman reigns win the WWE world heavyweight champion at wrestlemania32 then he loses to john cenaat summerslam2016?

WWE is quickly approaching "now or never" territory with Roman Reigns. Whether he's "ready" right now or not, they're eventually going to have to sink or swim with him. At the very least, he will lead a crop of talent that will be replacing Cena in the future.

In order to avoid the nuclear outrage that could surround the idea of Reigns winning the world title in the main event of WrestleMania, WWE should just nip it in the bud and have him win the world championship ahead of time. That way, he'd have time to grow as a world champion, and the paranoia of his "not being ready" for such a big WrestleMania main event will dissipate.

Is Hell in a Cell Doomed?

"

@ThisIsNasty Between Rusev/Lana engagement, Orton injury, weak Lesnar/Taker build, and poor Rollins booking, is anything saving HIAC?

— Collin Powell (@CollinCPowell) October 21, 2015

"

The actual Hell in a Cell show should save itself. Despite the lackluster buildup, the show will take place in a hot city with a very good on-paper lineup. With very little activity Monday on Raw, despite a star-studded lineup, the spotlight now shifts to Hell in a Cell for WWE to tease a big WrestleMania match or high-profile return.

With Cena rumored to take time off after Hell in a Cell, according to F4WOnline (h/t WrestlingInc.com) and the Undertaker-Lesnar feud set to end as well, I would be quite surprised if the show ended without a big moment that hinted toward a major future feud for these top stars.
