Gomez Diagnosed with Hand Contusion, Listed as Day-to-Day

Thursday, April 28

According to theย Houston Chronicle's Jake Kaplan, Gomez's X-rays came back negative.ย

Houston acquired Gomez via trade from the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015 because he is a two-time All-Star and former Gold Glove Award winner. His combination of power and speed makes him a threat at the plate, on the bases and in center field. The Astros are a better team with that versatility available on a daily basis.

Despite Gomezโ€™s impressive track record, he struggled at the dish for the Astros in 2015, hitting .242 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 41 games, although he drilled two home runs in the postseason.ย Thus far in 2016, he is batting .197 with no home runs and just two RBI.ย

The Astros made the playoffs last season and donโ€™t necessarily need Gomez healthy to compete, especially with Preston Tucker available to occupy center field. However, Gomezโ€™s track record indicates he would add more pop to the order and provide the defense of a former Gold Glove winner, which could prove to be the difference on the road to October.
