Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport added context to the decision when he said, "Luke McCown is having back surgery tomorrow, source said. His season is over. Explains the Matt Flynn signing."
The 30-year-old Flynn has moved around a lot lately. He appeared in three games with the Seattle Seahawks during the 2012 season, was traded to the Oakland Raiders in April 2013 and started one game before being released in October. Then the Buffalo Bills picked him up before releasing him one month later.
An injury to Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers led to a reunion between the Packers and Flynn in 2013. He started four games for the team that season and appeared in seven games during the 2014 season.
Flynn is the definition of a journeyman backup, but he's not without talent. The one game everyone knows him for was against the Detroit Lions in Week 17 of the 2011 season, where he threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-41 win.
There are moments in which Flynn still shows flashes of that brilliance, such as on this throw during the preseason when he was with the New York Jets, per the NFL's Twitter account:
Flynn has proved in the time since that showing against Detroit he's not an NFL starting quarterback, but there's nothing wrong with keeping him on the roster and using him in a short-term situation.
The Saints understand the value of having quality depth at quarterback, so adding Flynn to serve as a teacher and player will only make things better for the 2015 season.
