Tyrod Taylor, Percy Harvin, Sammy Watkins' Post-Week 1 Fantasy Advice

Adam WellsSep 13, 2015

If you had Tyrod Taylor and Percy Harvin starting on your fantasy team this week, congratulations, because you are apparently the smartest person in the world.

For the 99.9 percent of us who had no idea what Buffalo's offense would look like in Week 1, for one game, the Taylor era is off to a rousing start and Harvin looks like the dynamic playmaker everyone assumed he could be all those years ago in Minnesota.

Despite coming into the game with no starts in four seasons, Taylor looked like an old pro, with 236 yards of total offense (195 passing, 41 rushing) and one touchdown pass.

Harvin was on the receiving end of Taylor's touchdown pass, a 51-yarder, and racked up 88 total yards of his own (79 receiving).

The disappointment from the Bills' first game was Sammy Watkins, who was a non-factor, with three targets and no receptions.

Instead of focusing on the negative, though, let's accentuate the positive for a few minutes.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan has a formula he wants to follow to win games. He's going to rely on an outstanding defense and running game. Taylor's success came because he was efficient, completing 14 of 19 attempts and not needing to take big shots down the field.

Don't expect him to suddenly become a must-start fantasy option moving forward. He was facing an Indianapolis Colts defense that ranked 18th in rushing yards allowed and 19th in points allowed last season, per ESPN.com

It's not a good sign for long-term fantasy viability when a coach is essentially trying to limit his quarterback behind a running game.

Buffalo ran the ball 36 times, which is where the divide between Harvin and Watkins comes in future weeks. Harvin is a playmaker, able to line up at receiver, running back, quarterback in Wildcat situations, etc. Watkins is strictly a wide receiver.

Ryan knows how his team will be most successful this season. Buffalo attempted 579 passes last season, leading to Watkins catching 65 passes for 982 yards; by comparison, Ryan's Jets attempted 498 passes in 2014.

As talented as Watkins is, it's going to be hard for him to duplicate those rookie numbers due to the decreased volume of passes.

That makes Harvin a better fantasy option than Watkins moving forward, though tread lightly, because he hasn't played more than 13 games in a season since 2011. Ryan clearly believes in him, bringing him to Buffalo after trading for him with the Jets last year.

Of the trio, Harvin is the only one worth starting when the Bills host New England next week. If Taylor duplicates his performance in Week 2, then we can start discussing him as a viable fantasy quarterback.
