Jason Pierre-Paul Contract: Latest News and Rumors on Negotiations with Giants

Timothy RappSep 7, 2015

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul landed in New York and had a physical on Sept. 7, per Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer of NFL.com.

The team and defensive end had a meeting the same day to potentially resolve the contract dispute between them, but it could be a month or longer before the two sides reach an agreement.

The final deadline for Pierre-Paul and the Giants to reach a deal and have him eligible for the 2015 season is Nov. 17, per Ed Werder of ESPN.

JPP Fears Giants May Use NFI List to Keep Him at Same Price in '16

Monday, Sept. 21

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported Pierre-Paul's concern surrounding his future with the Giants:

Pierre-Paul, 26, has avoided the team all offseason, wary of signing his $14.813 million franchise tender for fear that the team would put him on the NFI list, per ESPN.com. However, as Werder noted on Sept. 8, the Giants would end Pierre-Paul's season by placing him on the NFI list. With the team's 53-man roster having been submitted, New York would be unable to activate Pierre-Paul after six games.

On Sept. 7, Rapoport noted he expects Pierre-Paul and the Giants to work out a new deal so he doesn't lose six game checks on the non-football injury list, while the Giants likely would agree to one that would also reduce his overall salary.

Per ESPN.com, Pierre-Paul wants to have talks that would guarantee "the prorated portion of his salary that reflects the number of games he and they expect him to be able to play."

It wouldn't benefit the Giants or Pierre-Paul if he ended up on the NFI list, as New York could use his presence on the defense and Pierre-Paul won't want to miss his game checks.

JPP Won't Sign in Near Future Despite Positive Meeting; DE Wants Team to Pay Full Tender

Tuesday, Sept. 8

Rapoport and Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL.com reported Pierre-Paul won't sign his tender "today or soon," saying the defensive end's hand "isn't quite ready" and it "could be more than a month" before it is. Kinkhabwala added a month "would be optimistic," while Rapoport made it clear the Giants did not rescind his tender and Pierre-Paul would sign it when healthy.

The news comes despite an earlier report from Dan Graziano of ESPN.com, who noted the Giants were "encouraged" by their meeting with Pierre-Paul, with the next step being a meeting with his agent to discuss a new contract, with it possibly taking place soon. Rapoport added the team was still reviewing his medical reports before deciding what the next step should be.

As for Pierre-Paul's stance on a new contract, Cole reported the defensive end wants the Giants to pay the entirety of the franchise tender they've offered him:

Pierre-Paul, who had his finger amputated after a fireworks accident in July, likely believes he will be ready for action in fewer than six games, and a source told Cole the defensive end is in excellent shape.

When healthy, Pierre-Paul has been a force on the edge for the Giants, notching 53 solo tackles and 12.5 sacks for the team last season. He would drastically improve New York's defense if he's on the field this season, though he won't be seeing it until he and the team end their staredown and come to a compromise on his contract.
