Joe PantornoSep 1, 2015

Sure, there's one week to go in the NFL's preseason schedule, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Rosters need to finalized and starters need to be named before the regular season kicks off in a couple of weeks.

For some, this is their last chance to prove they are worthy of being named to the first team while others are just hoping to make the final roster.

Here is a look at the Week 4 preseason schedule and some of the best matchups to be featured.

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Jets

There are two former New York Jets quarterbacks that could have been lining up under center on Thursday night in Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow, but according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, only one will get to face his old team:

While Sanchez sits, Tebow will need a good showing against the Jets to solidify his future in the NFL. Eagles head coach Chip Kelly told the team's Twitter account that Tebow "has had a good camp. It's a big week for him heading into Jets game."

He will be competing with Matt Barkley for the third-string slot on the depth chart with the loser facing the possibility of being dealt or released.

Barkley has gone 23 of 43 for 306 yards this preseason while Tebow is just 10 of 19 for 97. But Tebow has seen most of his time with the third- and fourth-string players while adding 50 yards on the ground.

While the numbers alone might portray that Barkley has the overwhelming advantage for the last spot, that is not the case, according to Eagles Insider:

Playing in a Chip Kelly college-like offense, Tebow's mobility could prove invaluable to a system that requires the most explosive players at as many positions as possible. If he is able to show an increase in his throwing accuracy that is at a career mark of 47.9 percent, Tebow could very well make this team.

While Barkley is more of a pocket passer that could be an attractive option to other teams that are looking for depth at the quarterback position, his style might not work out with Kelly. The Eagles already have two fairly immobile quarterbacks in Sam Bradford and Sanchez. Bringing Tebow on could give Philadelphia a Wildcat look to the offense, but with a quarterback who is capable of passing for big plays.

It will all depend on how they can break down a strong Jets defense, though they won't be playing many of their starters. But I'm sure Tebow would want nothing more than to earn a spot on an NFL roster by lighting up a former team of his.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Washington Redskins

Staying with the quarterback trend, there is plenty of drama in the nation's capital. Robert Griffin III, who many believed to be the starter, went down with a concussion during Week 2 of the preseason and discovered that his job won't be waiting for him when he returns, according to SportsCenter:

According to NFL.com's Albert Breer, it wasn't just Griffin's injury history that pushed Gruden to make this decision:

Kirk Cousins is next in line to run the offense against a weaker defense like the Jaguars. A positive outing, though it will probably be brief, could provide him with plenty of confidence leading into the regular season.

However, for a team that has five losing seasons in the past six years, Cousins doesn't seem to provide much of a culture change with a 2-7 career record with the Redskins.

That being said, one man wouldn't be able to turn around the weakest offense in the NFC East, especially with an offensive line that allows its quarterbacks to get hit as much as Griffin has. Mike Jones of the Washington Post explained after their preseason Week 2 loss to the Detroit Lions:

"

On Thursday night, however, Griffin did his best to stand tall in the pocket, but his linemen often got shoved back into him as he did. He hit three-step drops and let go of passes but had defenders driving him to the ground a fraction of a second after the throw.

"

It's imperative that Cousins gets rid of the ball quickly and shows a bit more care as he has run into turnover problems with 19 interceptions in 14 games.

But if he faces a lot of pressure, which seems likely with Washington's offensive line, he could be turning the ball over plenty of times. If that happens, Redskins fans might see Colt McCoy taking over first-string duties in the future.

September 3 is going to be a dress rehearsal for a multitude of players, not just Cousins, as all teams have to cut their roster from 75 players to just 53 by September 5. Of course, the quarterback position demands the most attention as the man leading the offensive huddle garners most of the pressure and blame if things don't go well.

With most first-stringers sitting, the last game of the preseason does not provide the best-possible action, but players performing for their careers will provide plenty of influential play come Thursday night.
