College Football Top 25: Week Three

Mark JonesSep 16, 2009

My weekly rankings have gotten started a little late, but you can now expect a personalized top 25 (plus five extra) rankings coming out each week from me.

Don't expect too much besides a simple list of the teams in order, also listing their record and AP rank in parentheses besides my rank. Some teams may receive a sentence or two describing their high rank.

For the weeks following this edition, there will also be a "Last Week" rank for each team listed:

Ohio State Team Doctor
2026 Florida Spring Football Game
College Football Playoff National Championship: Head Coaches News Conference

1. (AP-1) Florida Gators, 2-0

2. (AP-2) Texas Longhorns, 2-0...The Longhorns are a long way from first place, but expect them to contend well with Florida.

3.(AP-4) Alabama Crimson Tide, 2-0...Alabama is third for now, but I could see a major loss down the road.

4.(AP-3) USC Trojans, 2-0

5.(AP-8) California Golden Bears, 2-0...Watch for the Bears to possibly pull out the conference title and make a run for the national championship.

6.(AP-6) Penn State Nittany Lions, 2-0

7.(AP-5) Ole Miss Rebels, 2-0...Ole Miss has plenty of talent on both sides, but I'm still waiting for the Rebels to prove themselves.

8. (AP-10) Boise State Broncos, 2-0...The Broncos look good themselves, but their usual BCS-buster identity may have to be shared with some other teams this season.

9. (AP-11) Ohio State Buckeyes, 1-1...Ohio State has yet to put up a real convincing performance against Navy or USC, and I have my doubts on this team.

10. (AP-7) Brigham Young Cougars, 2-0...Incredibly they have cracked the Top 10, but they won't have an easy ride to the MWC title.

11. (AP-13) Virginia Tech Hokies, 1-1...By far the best team that never gets any big-time national title attention.

12. (AP-12) Oklahoma Sooners, 1-1

13. (AP-15) TCU Horned Frogs, 1-0...Watch for the Frogs to go seven or eight games before recording their first loss.

14. (AP-9) LSU Tigers, 2-0

15. (AP-21) Houston Cougars, 2-0...The lowest I've ranked the Cougars yet this season is 19th, including preseason, and they might be getting close to Boise State's position.

16. (AP-16) Oklahoma State Cowboys, 1-1...Don't give them too hard a time for the Houston loss, it alone shouldn't hurt them too much in the long run.

17. (AP-14) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 2-0...Blew the lead against Clemson, but showed that they can sure use the playbook.

18. (AP-17) Cincinnati Bearcats, 2-0

19. (AP-19) Nebraska Cornhuskers, 2-0...We'll see if they could be a force to be reckoned with in the Big 12 in the match against Virginia Tech this weekend.

20. (AP-18) Utah Utes, 2-0...They may still be in the Top 20, but the Utes have two great teams ahead of them in their own conference.

21. (AP-22) Kansas Jayhawks, 2-0

22. (AP-NR) Pitt Panthers, 2-0...Pitt is the most underrated team in every poll right now, and they could prove it with a long undefeated run.

23. (AP-23) Georgia Bulldogs, 1-1

24. (AP-20) Miami Hurricanes, 1-0...I'm not convinced that the victory against Florida State really showed us enough to be ranking the Canes this high...

25. (AP-NR) Oregon State Beavers, 2-0

26.(AP-NR) Missouri Tigers, 2-0

27. (AP-24) North Carolina Tar Heels, 2-0...They got away with a close one in Connecticut Saturday, and it led to a drop in the standings despite recording the win.

28. (AP-NR) UCLA Bruins, 2-0...I could see the Bruins having a great year and ending up in the top 15 by the season's end.

29. (AP-NR) West Virginia Mountaineers, 2-0

30. (AP-25) Michigan Wolverines, 2-0...All this hype may prove to be a bit overreactive by the press, as Michigan still probably will lose five games this season.

Look out next week for the next top 30! Comments and questions on these rankings are certainly appreciated!
