Gilas Pilipinas vs. Russia: Time, Live Stream for 2015 William Jones Cup

Matt FitzgeraldAug 31, 2015

Gilas Pilipinas showed that they were missing NBA player Andray Blatche en route to a loss to South Korea on Monday. That defeat drops the Philippines national team to 1-1 overall and into a precarious position entering Tuesday's matchup with Russia in the William Jones Cup.

Fresh off a 98-94 victory over New Zealand, Russia has improved to 3-0 and is tied with Iran atop the team standings. Unless Gilas' Jordan Clarkson was somehow able to become eligible, the team is in significant jeopardy of dropping a second straight contest.

Tipoff for Tuesday's contest at Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan, is slated for 1 p.m. local time, which converts to 1 a.m. ET. Live stream coverage is available on Sports5 but is exclusively for the Philippines.

Rappler's Ryan Songalia highlighted one of the main issues that plagued Gilas amid Monday's 82-70 defeat in which it entered the final quarter tied:

Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin implied after the South Korea game how ball movement was stagnant, hindering the squad's offensive execution down the stretch.

"They just outplayed us. I thought they were the better team," said Baldwin about South Korea, per Musong R. Castillo of the Philippine Daily Enquirer. "We just have to check that (individuality). Offensively, we just didn't have the flow."

Although Russia didn't execute well from three-point range en route to just 3-of-20 shooting from deep against New Zealand, its efficiency elsewhere was extremely impressive. The threes accounted for 17 of Russia's 24 missed field-goal attempts out of 53.

What allowed New Zealand to hang tough was numerous fouls committed by Russia. Thankfully for the victors, New Zealand converted only 22 of 43 attempts from the charity stripe. Gilas sank 14 of 16 free throws versus South Korea, so Russia can't afford to be in foul trouble to such a severe degree on Tuesday.

Terrence Romeo continues to be a bright spot for the Philippines. After netting 18 points in the victory over Chinese Taipei to start Gilas' William Jones Cup run, Romeo put up a game-high 23 against South Korea.

Whether Romeo can keep that going remains to be seen as Gilas prepares for the third of eight straight days of action. TJ Manotoc of ABS-CBN News highlighted how quick the turnaround is for the Philippines—off its worst quarter of the tournament to boot:

As long as Russia avoids hacking Gilas too severely, it should be able to stretch its tournament record to 4-0. There's little doubt this game will be close, though, especially considering Gilas welcomed back Ranidel de Ocampo to the lineup after he'd been out with a pulled hamstring.

De Ocampo showed rust versus South Korea in missing nine of 10 shots from the field. He's a stretch 4 who can keep Russia honest from the perimeter and help with spacing. Any nerves should be out the window for the five-time Philippine Basketball Association All-Star.

The combination of an improved de Ocampo and Romeo might be enough to inspire Gilas to an upset win despite the short rest.
