Marcell Dareus, Bills Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Mike ChiariSep 10, 2015

Marcell Dareus has developed into one of the NFL's premier defensive tackles, and the Buffalo Bills ensured Thursday they will retain his services for the foreseeable future.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the four-year veteran agreed to a six-year extension worth $108 million to remain one of the key figures on Buffalo's dominant defense.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports added the deal was worth a guaranteed $65 million, with a $25 million signing bonus, while Schefter said the contract had the most guaranteed money of any non-quarterback pact in league history.

However, despite the reported numbers, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said the deal actually comes in under the $100 million mark, with the defensive tackle slated to make $95.1 million:

"

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Dareus gets a signing bonus of $25 million, fully paid out by December. He also has a fully-guaranteed base salary of $3 million.

There’s a fully-guaranteed option bonus of $7 million due in March 2016, and his 2016 base salary of $7 million is fully guaranteed.

Also, the full guarantee moves to $55 million on the third day of the 2016 league year and to $60 million on the third day of the 2017 league year.

And while the guarantees can void if Dareus gets suspended again, the cap hit for cutting him in 2016 would be $20 million. In 2017, it would be $20.6 million.

"

Bills general manager Doug Whaley released a statement on the extension:

Buffalo selected Dareus, 25, with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft out of the University of Alabama, and he entered the 2015 campaign as a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro selection.

His 2014 performance was especially dominant, as he racked up 49 tackles and registered a career-high 10 sacks. Along with Kyle Williams, Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes, the 331-pounder anchors arguably the best defensive line in football.

Still, contract negotiations between the two sides didn't always go smoothly. Per Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News, Dareus felt somewhat disrespected by the front office's efforts during training camp:

"

They're making it hard. And it's just really making me unhappy. I feel like they don't really want me here. ... We're still waiting. I feel like they don't want me here as bad as I want to be here, as bad as the fans and my team wants me here. I feel like they're saying, "Whatever. You come a dime-a-dozen."

"

Dareus' comments came on the heels of Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reporting the Bills had made a long-term offer:

The Miami Dolphins gave defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh a six-year, $114 million deal, with $60 million guaranteed, in the offseason. But Dareus said he wasn't necessarily seeking that kind of money, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

"I'm not necessarily looking at Suh numbers," Dareus said. "I just want to be treated right, just like every one of us." He got treated right Thursday, and then some.

After signing Dareus, Buffalo may have to get creative with its salary cap. But Dareus is one of the best defensive players in the league, and he happens to be in his prime.
